The surprise hit of the summer 2006 film season also yielded one of the best soundtrack albums. It features selections from the score by respected composer Mychael Danna, performed by the Colorado-based chamber-pop group DeVotchka, whose lush, small-combo orchestrations are by turns haunting, fun, and beautiful. Also memorable as the sweet closing-credits music is Sufjan Stevens's "No Man's Land," and of course the music from the film's pivotal scene--Rick James's "Superfreak."
Composer: Mychael Danna.
Personnel: Robert "Robz C." Castillo (guitar); Sebastian Arocha Morton (Moog synthesizer, programming).

Little Miss Sunshine Soundtrack CD music
$7.59 Industry bigwig Tommy Mottola's discovery, French-language chanteuse Lara Fabian hits it big with her self-titled English solo debut. Packed with passionate love songs in the Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion vein, Fabian takes the power ballad one step further. Her voice and music are best described as dramatic, the songs here ranging from catchy tailor-made Top-40 dance tracks such as "Till I Get Over You," and "I Will Love Again," to power ballads such as "Adagio," which appears here both in English and Italian.
Fabian's voice is clear and amazingly ...

Little Miss Sunshine Soundtrack music CDs
$14.49 The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its sonic territory. But, even though the music remains remarkably focused, Grab That Gun proves ...

$10.19 Music composed by Jule Styne. Lyrics written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.
Do Re Mi was an ideal selection for City Center Encores!, a New York series that does concert versions of forgotten Broadway musicals. The show, about a small-time criminal's adventures in the music business, ran for 400 performances from 1960 to1962, but has not been revived onstage since. Its modest failure is usually put down to the book and direction of Garson Kanin, since principals Phil Silvers and Nancy Walker were accomplished comics and the score by Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green produced the standard "Make Someone Happy." Though the 1961 original ...

$14.29 Although it failed to find a sustaining audience when it opened on Broadway in 1976, Pacific Overtures, a musical about the opening of Japan to the West written by John Weidman with songs by Stephen Sondheim, continued to attract interest over the years, with an Off-Broadway production in 1984 and a British regional premiere in 1986. The English National Opera took it up the following year, opening the first London performance on September 10, 1987, followed shortly after by a recording of the full show that was issued on two CDs (That's Entertainment Records TER-21152) ...

$16.45 With the exception of the "Sextet for Diverse Instruments" and the "Voices in the Wind," this CD strongly showcases the piano -- the "transcendental" piano, in the sense that Liszt used the word. In other words, "damned difficult." This is certainly the case with the eponymous "Three Transcendental Piano Pieces" that open the CD, but ...
