As modern heavy metal acts go, Mare is indeed a rare breed. From the doom-drone-sludge of Sunn 0))) to the post-screamo of Envy to the tongue-in-cheek instru-metal of the Fucking Champs, the genre itself is all over the place. But as a band, Mare are all over the place within their own realm of sound. "Anisette," the opening track on their debut EP, resembles the metal-gone-post-rock of Pelican or Isis, all complex timing and mixed up tempos, but then the vocals arise from the depths, these being the death rock, Cookie Monster growls. The dark anger of that track resolves in the elegiac lightness of the second track, "They Sent You," which falls not so very far from Sigur Rós territory, with its classical instrumentation and choirboy vocals, which it can't long sustain as the track breaks out some heroic downtuned riffage. "Tropics" lumbers along like the Mars Volta kids fronting early Black Sabbath as a lounge act, which abruptly explodes into "Palaces," a dirgey slo-mo screamathon of epic proportion, which devolves into a metallic take on math rock time signatures of the Don Caballero ilk, which promptly dissolves into the "hidden" track, "Sun for Miles," an a cappella arrangement of angelic harmonies resembling the Beach Boys composing "serious" music, which then erupts in a by-now obligatory black metal screamfest. All in all a complex and confusing, yet cathartic, first offering. ~ Brian Way
Mare: Tyler Semrick-Palmateer (vocals).

Mare album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger
CD/DVD package will be a hardback deluxe slipcase with book featuring Enya art and images. The Very Best Of Enya CD/DVD package features the most comprehensive Enya DVD to date, encompassing thirteen videos as well as interview and behind the scenes footage. It also includes two making of' mini-documentaries examining the creation of the Caribbean Blue and Only Time videos. The DVD will contain audio up mixed to 5.1 surround sound. Twenty-two years have passed since the original release of Enya's self-titled debut album. During that time, Enya has become one of the world's most successful musicians with over 70 million album sales worldwide to her name and an array of authoritative honours including ...
| | Slayer World Painted Blood CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Mare CD music
$19.89 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga ...

| | Dethklok Metalocalypse: The Dethalbum CD (2007)
Mare songs
$12.19 THE DETHALBUM is an outgrowth of the hit cartoon series METALOCALYPSE, about over-the-top, fictional black metal act Dethklok. Despite the comedic origins of the project, series creator and Berklee School of Music grad Brendon Small puts a surprising amount of effort and craft into making this sound like actual black metal. Sure, the lyrics to songs such as "Murmaider" and "Briefcase Full of Guts" are ridiculous, but no more than actual Norwegian imports, and there's no joke to the punishing riffs, guttural demon vocals, and twisting ...
| | Throwdown Deathless CD (2009)
Mare album
$12.99 Throwdown have had to eat a lot of crap in recent years because their vocalist, Dave Peters, is doing such a blatant, idolatrous imitation of Pantera/Down vocalist Phil Anselmo. It doesn't help that with 2005's Vendetta they shifted from the thick-necked, straight-edge hardcore of their early catalog to a version of the "groove metal" practiced by Pantera, Trivium, and other modern metal bands. On this latest album, though, Peters occasionally shifts from imitating Anselmo to imitating Anselmo-imitating- Mudvayne's Chad Gray. The music, too, has a lot of Mudvayne's combination of groove and progressive epic-ness, coupled with Pantera's ultra-punishing, almost industrial riffs. So it seems like Throwdown are attempting to make some sort of crossover to mainstream metal success, and maybe even get a track on rock radio with the album opener "The Scythe," which features a clean chorus, or "The Blinding Light," which finds these Orange County boys attempting a Southern rock swagger -- Peters has moved from the Pantera phase to the Down phase of his Anselmo impersonation. "Widowed" is basically a power ballad, verging ...
| | Stryper Yellow And Black Attack CD (1984)
Mare CD music
$8.49 When church leaders were accusing heavy metal of encouraging Satanism, Stryper set out to prove that metal and hard rock could be used to promote Christianity. The southern California band was viewed with suspicion by both ministers (who refused to believe that Christianity and metal were compatible) and fellow headbangers -- and yet, Stryper managed to sell millions of albums to both Christian and secular audiences. Stryper's first release, The Yellow and Black Attack!, showed the rockers to be along the lines of Def Leppard and Quiet Riot musically, but not lyrically. On such likable cuts as "You Know What to Do," "Co'Mon Rock," and "Loud 'n' Clear," Stryper managed to promote a religious message without being preachy. While the uptempo songs are decent, the ballads are hard to take. In fact, "You Won't Be Lonely" and "My Love I'll Always Show" are about as unbearably syrupy ...
