Not having heard Brownsville Station since mid 70', this was really a pleasant surprise! Great boogie rock, my kind of music. I will most certainly buy more from this band!

Recorded in 1977, 1980, 1996 and 1999. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. While the album's title is deceiving -- all but five of the 18 tracks on this double disc originate from the '90s, and 11 of those are from the same show -- this is an adequate, well-recorded document of both the original and re-formed versions of Foghat running through their established repertoire. It also works as a tribute to Lonesome Dave Peverett, the group's lead singer and primary songwriter, who died of cancer in February 2000, about a year after the most recent recording here. Since the band hit their peak in 1977 with their first live recording (a 1977 version of "I Ain't Got You" is this disc's oldest, tightest, and most succinct performance and might even be an outtake from that album), this can't help but be a retread. Much of pianist Chris Ho's brilliantly wrought Lifetime disc plays like the Rippingtons would, were Russ Freeman's band a bit more straight-ahead inclined. Rolling along at a speedy clip, its high energy, largely sax, guitar, and synth driven fire is pop-funk based, but breaks every so often for a little traditional flavored passage. Though Ho bills this as a solo project, his unit -- featuring guitarist Michael O'Neill, alto saxophonist Wayne Wayne, and keyboardist John Balbuena -- shines as brightly, if not more so, than he does. It's ensemble work at its most democratic, but when Ho finally takes his cue to remind us whose name is on the label, he takes full advantage of our hunger. The title track -- a classical flavored piece which detracts from the bombs going off around it, but is a revelation taken on its own merit -- is a showcase for Ho's elegant compositional flair. And the band's sense of adventure is not limited to the fun pop tunes.
