In 1976, when AURORA was recorded, fusion was on its way out. But that didn't hinder Ponty in the slightest-he was just beginning. AURORA was the goddess of the dawn, and Ponty's electrifying violin signaled her arrival with nova bursts of brilliant light and fire.
Accompanied by guitarist Darryl Stuermer, keyboardist Patrice Rushen, bassist Tom Fowler (like Ponty, another Frank Zappa alumni), and drummer Norman Fearrington, Ponty trades off everything from killer jazz rock ("Is Once Enough") and almost "country"-inflected fusion ("Renaissance") to ravishing acoustic/electric ballads (the dreamy "Lost Forest"). Though virtually alone in making it a fusion instrument, Ponty has single-handedly invented a new vernacular for the violin. Ponty eventually augmented his sound with various electronic devices and MIDI implementation, and AURORA contains some of his first tantalizing steps forward. Aurora album
$5.95 Ponty kicked off the '80s with an anomalous jolt of electronicized jazz funk. Fusion had begun to recede into small, underground pockets, hiding its head in fear, overwhelmed by bad muzak and the rejuvenation of tepid traditionalism. Experimentalism was left to other genres, but Ponty plowed on, updating his sound to reflect the changing technological flavors of the time. On CIVILIZED EVIL, he let his obvious love for electronics and science fiction advance to the fore.
"Demagomania" is a bass-driven showcase for Chris Rhyne's wedges of prog synth and Ponty's intergalactic violin bursts. "Forms of Life" is Ponty lost in a forest of silicon gadgetry, a nearly five-minute fugue of majestic keyboard clusters, stuttering violins, and punchy synth bass. And "Happy Robots" sees Ponty and his band jammin' down at the Star Wars cantina, doing a disco-funk wigwam with Ponty soloing over the top. Never has such wicked evil sounded so intoxicatingly ...
| | Jean-Luc Ponty Imaginary Voyage CD (1976)
Aurora CD music
$5.95 As of 1976, Jean-Luc Ponty's variations on the Mahavishnu Orchestra theme were still fresh and imaginative, cast in a distinctively different, more lyrical, more controlled framework. For Imaginary Voyage, Ponty's instrumental lineup is identical to that of Mahavishnu -- electric violin, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums -- but he turns the emphasis on its head, with all commands coming directly from the violin (his) and less competitive crossplay emanating from his colleagues. For starters, "New Country" is a lively jazz-rock hoedown, one of those periodic C&W side trips that some fusioneers attempted for a lark, and "The Gardens of Babylon" is a wonderfully memorable tune, the beginnings of which grow out of "New ...
| | Jean-Luc Ponty Cosmic Messenger CD (1978)
Aurora music CDs
$8.39 COSMIC MESSENGER is certainly more "cosmic" than Ponty's previous releases, thanks to the violinist's more pronounced use of synthesizer and the enlisting of Allan Zavod as his main keyboardist. The album finds Ponty exacting the energized fundamentals of rock while simultaneously fleshing out his already expanding sound palette.
With exuberant, atmospheric violin etchings and exciting runs of drums and bass underpinning Zavod's guitar thrusts, "Don't Let the World Pass You By" summarizes the Ponty songbook. Released at the end of the ...
| | Jean-Luc Ponty Taste For Passion CD (1979)
Aurora songs
$5.95 Despite the title, this release is more subdued than its predecessors on the shelves, more tightly controlled, more conventional in instrumentation. Jean-Luc Ponty temporarily pulls back on electronic display for its own sake, even permitting some acoustic instruments to take the fore, and the recorded sound is drier and less lustrous. Nevertheless, Ponty's urbane Euro-sensibility can still be felt strongly in these ...
| | Jean-Luc Ponty Enigmatic Ocean CD (1977)
Aurora album
$8.39 Arguably Jean-Luc Ponty's finest record, ENIGMATIC OCEAN benefits from the two-pronged attack of Ponty's engrossing violin playing and guitarist Allan Holdsworth's equally majestic command of his own six-string and its accompanying devices. Compositionally, the tracks move from fast and furious fusion to moments of blissful restraint.
The lovely "Nostalgic Lady" features Holdsworth in peak form, coloring in the foreground with pastel shades of guitar synth, while former Journey drummer Steve Smith caresses Ponty's sultry violins with graceful strokes to cymbal and snare. The multi-part title track soars on spacey beds of synthesizer, guitar, ...
| | Jean-Luc Ponty Upon The Wings Of Music CD (1975)
Aurora CD music
$10.19 Jean-Luc Ponty, who at the time was still with the second version of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, is heard playing his own brand of fusion on this excellent recording. Upon the Wings of Music set the standard for his music of the next decade. With keyboardist Patrice Rushen, Dan Sawyer or Ray Parker on guitars, bassist Ralphe Armstrong and drummer Ndugu, the violinist performs eight of his highly arranged but spirited originals. His early Atlantic recordings (of which ...
