Bottom Of Your Soul music CDs
$11.65 The adult-contemporary band Toto--initially comprised of Steve Porcaro, Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Robert Toteaux, and David Hungate--hit the stratosphere with its 1982 Grammy Award winner for best album, TOTO IV. This effort (the group's best-known work) spawned the multi-platinum singles "Rosanna" and "Africa," but the band had already released several critically championed albums by that point: 1978's TOTO (with the best selling-single "Hold the Line"), 1979's HYDRA, and 1981's TURN BACK--all of which sported anthems that became iconic benchmarks of early '80s soft rock. The group continued to tour over the following decades, despite a series of slight critical disappointments and the death of one of its key members, Jeff Porcaro. Toto experienced a striking renaissance on Valentine's Day ...
| | Patrick Moraz III CD (1978)
Bottom Of Your Soul songs
$14.89 Loosely planned around a concept of primitive (i.e. acoustic) culture clashing and then merging with modern (i.e. synthesizer) culture, Patrick Moraz could more accurately be said to track the keyboardist's descent from the rich acoustic diversity of his '70s releases into the synthesized tones of his '80s albums. While heavily processed vocoder lines show up in "Primitivisation," this album is largely instrumental. The result, though, is less a satisfying album than a interesting demo of Moraz's future work. The appropriately cheery "Temples of Joy" makes its debut here; with Bill Bruford's fine drumming added, it would reappear in an otherwise identical form six years later on Flags. That same album's "Karu" appears here as a solo in the gentle vocal piece "Keep the Children Alive," while the woozy pitch-bending synths of "The Conflicts" prefigures such releases as Future Memories. It is a pivotal album in Moraz's development, and thus worth a listen to Moraz fanatics, but there's little of abiding interest other than Moraz's pleasantly pensive piano solo in "Intentions." ~ Paul Collins

| | Marillion Happiness Is The Road: Essence Vol. 1 CD (2008)
Bottom Of Your Soul album
$10.05 The band that ushered in the British neo-prog wave in the 1980s, Marillion has proved itself to be a true survivor. Still going strong in 2008, the band is as ambitious as ever, releasing their latest batch of tunes, HAPPINESS IS THE ROAD, as two separate volumes. Where its sister album, THE HARD SHOULDER, is a more visceral, rocking effort, the first volume, ESSENCE, is a lush, atmospheric affair, somewhat reminiscent of latter-day (post-Roger Waters) Pink Floyd, but with a more contemporary flavor that neatly dodges retro cliches.
Marillion's 15th album is actually double album split into two separate CDs. 'Happiness is the Road Volume One' is subtitled 'Essence' and contains all new material from one of the most loved and passionate bands in the world. A new creative streak of writing and producing music was captured in the studio and fans will not be disappointed. Pushing the boundaries of what a 'typical' Marillion CD is supposed to sound like as well as keeping the magic that makes them Marillion. Amazing. Volume Two of 'Happiness is the Road', 'The Hard Shoulder,' will be released on the same day as well!

Bottom Of Your Soul songs
$7.79 The three accompanying numbers to the title track here, as on the first part of the single, offer different peeks into Hannon's various musical obsessions. The demo version of "Something for the Weekend," quite unlike the full band performance, is a twinkly, surging synth instrumental here, a giddily over-the-top take. "Neptune's Daughter," a radio session take of the Promenade track, is done straightforwardly and simply, just Hannon, acoustic guitar and piano. "Tonight We Fly," also originally from Promenade and redone for radio, retains the rushed, exultant feel of the original track, performed here by the six-member touring lineup of the band. ~ Ned Raggett
The sweeping title track, one of Hannon's best mega-'60s MOR numbers, gets three radically different partners on this disc. "Motorway to Damascus" lets Hannon dig out an early-'80s jones with a spooky, beautifully chilly Visage/Japan synth number over which he sings a barbed lyric about how the grand structures of today might yet be the romantic ruins of the future. "A Woman of the World" appears in a full band arrangement, but otherwise ...

$17.15 After taking a break from the recording/touring grind to let their breakthrough commercial success sink in, Night Ranger issued their third album, SEVEN WISHES, in 1985.
