Naked On The Black Floor
$13.09 This album is a sort of summit conference of underground heavy music. Guitarists and vocalists Scott "Wino" Weinrich (the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, the Hidden Hand) and Scott Kelly of Neurosis are grizzled veterans whose hoarse, guttural shouts and instantly recognizable, distorted guitar tones carry the authority of years of hard touring and introspective yet still crushing rock, while bassist Al Cisneros ...

| | Converge Axe To Fall CD (2009) Digipak
Naked On The Black Floor
$12.75 Converge's eighth studio album is packed with guest performances by kindred spirits from Massachusetts and beyond. "Effigy," one of four songs on the album that comes in under the two-minute mark, features Steve Brodsky and Adam McGrath of Cave In on guitar and that group's drummer, J.R. Conners, behind the kit. Uffe Cederlund of Disfear takes over lead guitar on "Wishing Well," while Steve Von Till of Neurosis sings on "Cruel Bloom" and Genghis Tron' Mookie Singerman does guest vocals on the seven-minute album closer, "Wretched World." But it's the core group that delivers the most astonishing displays of hardcore fury and progressive musical exploration on AXE TO FALL. Opening cut "Dark Horse," propelled by a Disfear-esque riff so insane it'll make you think your CD is playing at the wrong speed, kicks off a breathless sprint that lasts all the way to the doomy, noisy fifth track, "Worms Will Feed." It's astonishing that Converge have time to put this much thought ...

| | Nighthawks Open All Nite CD (1976)
Naked On The Black Floor
$12.49 When Open All Nite was first released on LP in 1976, the Nighthawks had only been together for four years -- little did they know that they would still be together in the 21st century and would celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2002. Some young bands sound like they still have some growing and developing to do, but the Nighthawks never sound the least bit undeveloped on Open All Nite. The blues-rockers always sound focused, and they know exactly what they're going for on gritty performances of "Nine Below Zero," Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man," and other Chicago blues staples. The Nighthawks were never innovative, but they were always sincere and honest, which is why they bring so much enthusiasm ...

| | Clutch Pitchfork & Lost Needles CD (2005)
Naked On The Black Floor
$10.69 Includes the complete PITCHFORK 7" EP (1991) and rare bonus tracks.
Pitchfork & Lost Needles includes Clutch's debut 7" in its four-song entirety and augments that with unreleased tracks and demo versions. As this set proves, the veteran quartet began as a band crouched between the Melvins, a viscous form of hardcore (think a slower, more economic Sick of It All), and the literate but still loud post-punk of Jawbox. "Wicker" is in blistering half-time, its layers of needling guitars and Neil Fallon's yawping proclamations ("Pacemaker! LIFE TAKER!") skinned to their barest, most powerful essence. "Arcadia" is three minutes of stocky thud, the sort of thing flannel-shirted bullies would blast from crappy boom boxes in the early '90s. The unreleased tracks are equally strong, from the low-slung grind of the perfectly named "Nero's Fiddle" to the relatively upbeat "Passive Restraints," ...
| | Riot Narita CD (1979) Import
Naked On The Black Floor
$18.59 New York's Riot is unfortunate representative of a "lost generation" of American hard rock bands. Formed in the late '70s, when widespread record industry recession conspired with disco's airwave domination and headline-grabbing (but little-album-selling) punk rock to drive even some of the decade's most successful heavyweight dinosaurs (Black Sabbath, Kiss, etc.) to the brink of extinction, Riot saw precious few of their contemporaries (most notably Van Halen) actually make it through to the big time. Not so lucky as the California quartet, Riot had to seek out a foreign label to take a chance on their stellar eponymous debut in 1977, and then financed a second, Narita, on their own dime before managing to lure a still rather hesitant Capitol Records to pick it up. Finally released in late 1979, Narita was named after the Japanese airport controversially built on sacred ground (hence its bizarre album cover) and contained slick but powerful hard rock -- nowhere near as combustible as VH's debut, but hardly squeaky-clean like Boston's, either. In fact, the record's more considered tracks, such as "Waiting for the Taking" and "Kick Down the Wall," were generally the ones that left something wanting, while most of its best songs -- "49er," "Hot ...
| | Atheist Elements CD (1993) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Naked On The Black Floor
$11.39 Moving further away from the confines of metal, Atheist's third and final release, ELEMENTS, is an exercise in progressive, technical musicianship. Less bound by song composition and more geared towards musical exploration, Atheist cracks the mold once again, incorporating touches of flamenco and funk into its already massive sound base. The remastered edition features six bonus tracks from a live radio broadcast in 1992, plus extensive biographical information.
Easily the most accessible of Atheist's three albums, 1993's Elements was recorded under duress ...
