A director and two of his stooges convince a studio head that the only way to save themselves from being swallowed up by the voracious Engulf and Devour Corporation is to go back to the days of Garbo and Gilbert...in other words, make a nontalking picture.

SILENT MOVIE is director Mel Brooks's comic tribute to the golden days of the silent screen. A movie within a movie, SILENT MOVIE stars Brooks as Mel Funn, a filmmaker who has seen better days--for one thing, he's just come out of a bout with the bottle. When his best friends (Marty Feldman and Dom DeLuise) rescue him from despair and convince him to make another attempt at moviemaking, Mel comes up with an idea--a silent picture. Alas, this is the 1970s, and in order to get backing from wacky, frazzled studio chief Sid Caesar, the three pals have to get lots of celebrities to agree to be in their silent picture. SILENT MOVIE is, in fact, silent, and all the celebrities play themselves (or parodies of themselves). Funny, warm, and packed with sight gags galore, the film evokes the days of Chaplin, Keaton, and Pickford and Fairbanks while remaining oddly, and wondrously, contemporary. There is hardly a funnier scene than when Burt Reynolds--vainly admiring himself in the mirror while showering--is talked-up about the movie by DeLuise, Brooks, and Feldman, all in the shower together.

Screenwriter Ron Clark, who conceived the film, said he thought there were only two directors who could make it: Brooks and Woody Allen. Engulf & Devour, the corporation that's trying to buy up the studio in the film, was a swipe at Gulf & Western, who bought Paramount around the time the film was written. Clark said he thought of the whole film at once, "the sets, the plot, even all the cameos," and he at once set about getting each celebrity who actually ended up appearing in the film. Attention: Spoiler! Marcel Marceau broke a famous vow of silence (as a mime) and uttered the only word in SILENT MOVIE.

5 stars GREAT, GREAT FILM WIDE SCREEN but EXTRAS WHERE ARE YOU
I have always LOVED this film. Saw it several times in the theater when I was a kid. The screen with Paul Newman in the wheelchair chase is as funny today as when the film was first released. I was so glad when I heard this DVD was coming out & I could finally have the film at home wide screen. But, but, I am SO DISAPPOINTED. There are no extras. None, zip, zero. Nothing. What a let down!! And, I hate when DVD packages come out like this. No page with the DVD chapter search. It is a shame this was the care given to this package of this film. So glad to have it wide screen finally, but what a let down of no extras or the chapter page.

Mel Brooks aims his pun-gun at the Dracula legend--and, particularly, at Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA--in this undead spoof. In DRACULA: DEAD AND LOVING IT, Leslie Nielsen brings the deadpan humor of the NAKED GUN series to the role of the infamous vampire. Between its many sight gags and puns, the movie sticks fairly closely to the classic story line of previous screen versions, beginning with Renfield's (Peter MacNicol) visit to Count Dracula's creepy Transylvanian castle on legal business. The solicitor becomes Dracula's insect-munching slave and the two journey to London, where the count racks up more victims, most notably the busty Lucy Westenra (Lysette Anthony). When Dracula's archenemy, Dr. Van Helsing (Mel Brooks), attempts to end the vampire's reign of terror, oodles of mayhem and gallons of fake blood are let loose on Victorian London. As one would expect from Brooks and Nielsen, this particular Dracula--who is prone to falling down staircases and crashing into ...

In this perceptive, sidesplitting homage to Hichcock films, director, star, and writer Mel Brooks plays the average American guy, psychiatrist Richard Thorndyke (as in Roger Thorndike, Cary Grant's character in NORTH BY NORTHWEST), who's terrified of heights (think VERTIGO). He becomes the new chief of the Institute for the Very Very Nervous, where things are not what they seem, and it's not long before Richard finds himself embroiled in murder, deception, and other hilarious situations. While Brooks plays the quintessential innocent man ...

A parody of the much-done medieval English tale of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS also directly lampoons the politically correct ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES, which starred the hearthrob of the time, the very un-British Kevin Costner. English hearthrob Cary Elwes gets a turn in the role of the hero of Sherwood Forest who robs from the rich to give to the poor when he returns from the Crusades to find his beloved King Richard (Patrick Stewart in an amazing Sean Connery imitation) usurped by the evil Prince John (Richard Lewis) and his henchman, the Sheriff of Rottingham (Roger Rees). In typical Brooks ...

A stylish, frantic fable and one of director Mel Brooks's earliest films, THE TWELVE CHAIRS is a madcap mystery set in revolutionary Russia. An aging ex-nobleman of the czarist regime, Count I.M. Vorobyaninov (Ron Moody), has finally adjusted to life under the commissars in Russia.
