3 stars Disappointing!
Great anticipation for new music from the great Roy Haynes ends up in a letdown. First, but not most important - sound is so-so, coming from a not too ideally balanced live recording that likely wasn't done with CD release in mind. But musically is where the problem lies - although everyone plays great, the focus is clearly on showing Roy's chops in old age off - and the result is that the whole affair comes off as a showpiece for Roy, much like Buddy Rich records became totally focused on being showpieces for Buddy Rich. A missed opportunity.
