Live In The Real World
$14.35 Star One is the latest project from Arjen Anthony Lucassen (the man who almost single-handedly is Aryeon). Lucassen seems to like to assemble groups of musicians to record his works under various band names. Such is the case with this project. The group here has cut loose with their first project, entitled Space Metal. With a title like that, one might expect to hear a more hard-edged version of the space rock sounds of bands like Hawkwind. That is not, however, the case. Instead, Lucassen and his cohorts (Ed Warby, Sir Russel Allen, Damian Wilson, Dan Swano, Floor Jansen, and various guests) make music that is more like a cross between Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Deep Purple. Of course, the neo-symphonic modes for which Lucassen seems to have such a fondness also appear. The result is an intriguing combo that seems a bit contrived and sterile at times, but certainly should please fans of the prog metal genre. ~ Gary Hill

| | Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
Live In The Real World
$10.59 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed ...

Live In The Real World
$20.25 Sidestepping the glam and thrash obsessions of their peers, Dream Theater updates Rush's blueprint with a modern texture. The progressive metal touchstones are all here: changing time signatures, dizzyingly complicated tablature, tonsil-snapping lead vocals, lyrical bombast, and a healthy sense of self-importance. John Petrucci and Co. deftly combine all of these elements on SCORE: 20th ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR LIVE WITH THE OCTAVARIUM ORCHESTRA, their fourth (!) live record since 2001. While SCORE might not be the best start for neophytes, the three-disc opus will sate the appetites of serious devotees.
2006 commemoration of the group's 20th Anniversary World Tour on 3CD's, recorded live at Radio City Music Hall on April Fool's Day, 2006 with The Octavarium Orchestra. Almost 3 full hours of ...

Live In The Real World
$13.79 British import editioin, includes a hidden bonus track ("All Bourgeous Now").
One of the continuing mysteries of rock & roll is how the Manic Street Preachers can continue to be hailed as demi-gods in their native UK but get relegated to permanent cult status in America. While that situation is unlikely to change, KNOW YOUR ENEMY is probably as close as the band has come to album with potential US appeal. It's not that the band's revolutionary ideology has softened, but they've varied their sonic palette a bit.
The keyboards and harmonies adorning the melodic pop of "So Why So Sad" suggest that the Preachers have been listening to the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B." The aptly titled "Miss Europa Disco Dancer" could be a long-lost China Crisis, with its ironic Brit-funk feel. A mix of acoustic guitars and ...

Live In The Real World
$21.65 A GROUNDBREAKING MUSICAL RESOURCE FOR HOSPICES, HOSPITALS, NURSES, CHAPLAINS, MUSIC OR RECREATIONAL THERAPISTSOn Hugs & Kisses, Bev Foster’s soothing voice and delicate touch on the piano, coupled with the delicate sounds of Beverley Johnston's vibraphone and bells provide a sweet, flowing ribbon of hope and beauty. The music combines traditional lullabies with Disney favorites and some original tunes to create an inspirational accompaniment for life’s journey. Hugs & Kisses is especially for children. The inspiration for Room 217 has come from the loss of two very special people in Bev’s life, her dad and her grandmother. Music played an important role in her relationship with both of them through the years. During the last months of their lives, music became a source of connection, comfort and communication between them. When Bev and her family were at a loss for words or when she was just by their bedside holding them, music bridged time and eternity and soothed the heartache each felt. Her father died in Room 217 at the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital, just north of Toronto, Ontario Canada. Bev believes music reassured him and lessened the fear of death. Nanny Gross died one year later at the age of 95. Bev Foster has taught music privately and in the school system for 25 years. She has served as executive director of the Ontario Vocal Festival and accompanist for the Orpheus Choir of Toronto. She was also recently nominated for a Shai Award for Best Inspirational ...
