The storied, decades-long career of Montreal legends Voivod--the most inventive and influential thrash/prog-metal group possibly ever--turned a tragic chapter in August 2005, following the death of guitarist and founding member Denis "Piggy" D'Amour from cancer. It was Piggy's preternatural sense that his time was nearly up that led him to record guitar tracks for several albums' worth of material before he passed, as well as instructions for their use.
KATORZ is the first installment of this material, finished by original members Snake on vocals, Away on drums, and former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. The result is a guitar-thick, fairly straight-ahead, yet extremely engaging affair that cuts through the artsy murk of their previous album, and returns the group to a high-water mark not heard since 1989's NOTHINGFACE. Intense, paranoid, and calculated, KATORZ will remain a bittersweet send-off to Piggy, but with its determined charge, one that will fuel the band's creative vault for years to come.
Voivod: Denis Belanger (vocals); Denis d'Amour (guitar); Jason Newsted (bass guitar); Michel Langevin (drums).
Unknown Contributor Roles: Jason Newsted; Michel Langevin.
Spin (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Propulsive and swinging, devoid of egotism and ugliness, climaxing with heavy music's answer to Talking Heads' 'Life During Wartime'..." CMJ (p.23) - "Voivod have always experimented, pushing the parameters of metal by twisting prog with thrash and alt-rock, and the cacophonic KATORZ is no different." Katorz Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Great CD This is a must have for any Voivod fan. It sounds like a bittersweet tribute to dearly departed Piggy..who had already recorded all the guitar parts before his death. The vibe is similar to "The Outer Limits". you must *listen* to this album to get it yes, this is the sort of record that you have to put on and listen to. that sounds strange, isn't that what you always do with a record? well, you should. if you put this CD on and go about your bizness of the day, you will not get it. there are so many interesting nooks and crannies on this album. at first it seems rather bland, but IF YOU SIT DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION you will hear a work of total genius, which is what a voivodian would come to expect from these masters. in many ways, it is a bittersweet recording, given the cirumstances of piggy's passing and all, but in spite of the emotional attachment i have to voivod and to piggy, there is no doubt that this is a masterpiece; right up there with "dimention" or "nothingface". Excellent follow-up to their 2003 album Masterfully played cyber punk/technical trash. The disc sounds similar to their self-titled 2003 album, with more psychedelic elements and odd riffs from Dimension Hatross and Nothingface. My favourite song is 'The Getaway' and 'Polaroids'. R.I.P. Piggy. It may be challenging to fill in Piggy's shoes, but a band like Voivod should eventually go on with a new guitarist. I do not expect it to happen until all Piggy's material is released - which may be another album. Submitted by Voivod fan since 1984 (Hamilton, ON, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Piggy was great Voivod was as innovative to metal as Floyd was to classic rock. Piggy was an underated guitarist. This cd does nothing for his legacy Nothing on this cd really impresses. Even the last Voivod cd with Gasmask Revival had that dissonant chord style of Piggy but this cd sounds like what it is- Music set to some ideas found on Piggy's portastudio I found it pretty uninteresting musically for Voivod but I guess its a way to say good by to a fabulous guitarist Submitted by squarerooters (Long Island,NY) Was This Review Helpful?
