Brazilian music has always been a big influence for electronica artists (not to mention jazz and rock artists, as well, but that's a whole different album), and although Kinkysweet's not the first to compile something that shows that off (and certainly won't be the last), what they've released with Frequent Flyer: Ipanema is still a pretty good collection in its own right. The first disc focuses more on the lighter, breezier sounds of artists like Seu Jorge and Bebel Gilberto, while the second moves into the cooler club sounds that dominate warm Rio nights, with songs and remixes by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian groups. This distinction is not concrete, however: the Thievery Corporation show up on disc one, for example, while Rithma's "Along the Way" would fit perfectly next to the Zigo track, but hey, who really cares, anyway? More important is that the music's relaxing and warm, that the beat's steady, and that the whole thing is fun. On all counts, Frequent Flyer: Ipanema delivers. ~ Marisa Brown

The Kinkysweet label continued its output of thematic mix CDs with the Frequent Flyer series, which supplanted the long-running Bargrooves series. These two-disc mixes are thematic in the sense that they're assembled with a particular locale in mind, namely a fashionable far-flung metropolis with a particular style of music to its credit. Predictably, the Buenos Aires volume is characterized by various aspects of tango, though at its core this mix is firmly within the house music camp. For instance, instruments generally associated with tango, such as the accordion, are all over this volume, and a number of selections are full-on tango-house fusions. While there are a number of standout tracks (e.g., Federico Aubele's "Postales") and some big-name talent showcased (4hero, Thievery Corporation, Nuspirit Helsinki), this isn't an all-around excellent ...

Of the numerous brands of mix CDs released by Kinkysweet, the Frequent Flyer line is the most interesting. Like all Kinkysweet releases, each is a double-CD mix comprised of deep house, most tracks employing vocals sparsely. The Frequent Flyer releases are unique because they're giving a geographic accent; in the case of Frequent Flyer: Barcelona, there's a shade of Catalan culture and music. This distinguishing characteristic is welcome and well evident on most of the selections. Roughly half of the 22 tracks were produced by David Ferrero, a capable producer, although his legion of monikers doesn't mask the fact that all of his work originated from the same studio and tends to sound similar. However, Barcelona's rich and flourishing music scene is highlighted by the one big-name featured artist here, Ojos de Brujo. ~ Jason Birchmeier
