| | Conjunto De Arpa Grande Arpex Tierra Caliente! - Music From The Hotlands Of Michoacan CD Conjunto De Arpa Grande Arpex Discography of CDs
Smithsonian Folkways' TIERRA CALIENTE! is leagues ahead of any run-of-the-mill conjunto release. While most albums featuring this type of rural Mexican music are thrown together on the cheap, Folkways takes its usual care compiling this fine set by Michoacan's Conjunto de Arpa Grande Arpex (whose name translates into English as the Big Harp Ensemble).
Boasting guitars, violins, and a harp that serves both a melodic and a percussive function, Conjunto de Arpa has an immediately appealing traditional sound. Many of the songs tell a story, but listeners who don't understand Spanish will still find plenty to appreciate in the upbeat dance tunes and plaintive rancheras. An extensive, informative booklet supplies historical and cultural context, making for a perfect introduction to this dynamic music.Dirty Linen (p.83) - "Their high sibling harmonies invoke goose bumps. The band has a tight sense of ensemble and brilliant technique." BLUE WONDER POWER MILK contains a hidden track after "Magneta."
Staying true to eclectic ambience through dramatic electronic music, Hooverphonic raise the pressure from their debut single "2Wicky" for a more passionate effort on their second album, Blue Wonder Power Milk. Album opener "Battersea" arrives with Arnaert's breathy vocals for a spiraling drum'n'bass track about self-indulgence.
