This film depicts one of the most controversial historical events of the 20th Century: the assassination of Len Trotsky, a communist who was instrumental in founding the Red Army and the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party. Expelled from his homeland, Trotsky was allowed to reside in Mexico, after Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican muralist and his wife, had used their influence to make this possible. But tragedy unfolds when Ramn Mercader, one of Lenin's most loyal followers makes his way through different identities to finally reach Trotsky's hiding place in Coyoacn.
