Windmills By The Ocean
$14.29 Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, the much-anticipated follow-up to Godspeed You Black Emperor's Slow Riot, is a double-disc achievement of four works (each with multiple parts): "Storm," "Static," "Sleep," and "Antennas to Heaven." It is a windfall for any fan of ambient pop, orchestral rock, space rock, or simply lush string arrangements who understands how powerful love, melancholy, and frustration can be. The main complaint voiced by critics of Godspeed's music is that their works just repeat the same pattern: start out sparse and slow, build-build-build, crescendo. While there are certainly crescendos, ...
| | Isis SGNL-05 CD (2001)
Windmills By The Ocean
$5.99 Isis: J. Caxide, A Harris, M. Gallagher, A Turner, C. Meyer. Audio Mixer: Matt Bayles. Audio Remixer: Justin Broadrick. Recording information: Home; Outpost In Stoughton, MA. Editors: Dave Merullo; Isis. From the intriguing opening sound textures of SGNL>05, one wouldn't imagine that this gentle stream would evolve into a grand work of nu-metal mastery. Here, Isis weaves a beautiful tapestry of lilted piano set deep into the mix of a windswept field recording, but it doesn't take long for the ...

Recording information: Red Room Recording, Seattle, WA. Funny how progressive metal pioneers Neurosis existed in a virtual creative vacuum for almost a decade before the similarly inventive Isis tapped into their musical teachings, expanded upon them, and, ...
| | Red Sparowes Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun CD (2006)
Windmills By The Ocean
$12.79 Instrumentals in metal are nothing new (heck, Metallica used to put one on every record!), but what is a new occurrence is the veritable wave of purely instrumental bands that seem to have spewed out of nothing in the waning years of the first decade of the ol' 21st. Some, like Pelican, are bands that have just simply brushed aside the need for a vocalist, letting guitar parts handle such melodies and harmonies and keeping a basic song structure that is, for the most part, band-driven. Others, like the "guitar collective" that is Tone, are more, well, collective in sound, sort of a wall of music, with guitars layered on top of guitars, all playing the same chord changes to produce something that sounds more like heavy-duty ripples emanating from a common center. If there is one band that manages to capture the grey area that the aforementioned bands create between them, it is certainly Red Sparowes, who do it to great effect on Every Red Heart Shines Toward ...

| | Valensia Queen Tribute CD (2003)
Windmills By The Ocean
$16.45 QUEEN TRIBUTE, the 2003 cover album from celebrated heavy metal group Valensia, pays homage to Queen. This CD contains the bonus cut "You Take My Breath Away." Aldous Byron Valensia Clarkson (aka Valensia) presents the music of Queen in an interesting light. The album cover is stunning and gorgeous, shadowed pastels creating eye-catching visuals which complement the smooth renditions of material made famous by Freddie Mercury, Brian May and company. Valensia's vocals do an accurate job of copying Mercury -- so much so fans could easily mistake this as the real thing. It brings to mind Todd Rundgren's delightful Faithful album -- more than a "tribute" in the purist sense of the term. Rundgren simply had fun proving to the world he could duplicate "Strawberry Fields Forever," as well as Jimi Hendrix. And that's what Valensia seems to be doing here, having fun while making a statement that he has the chops to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. OK, so "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a tough mountain to climb, and doing it so well is indeed an achievement, but the true standard for cover versions remains Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels' dismantling of Lou Reed's song, "Rock & Roll," and reconstructing it to the point where everyone from the Runaways to Blue Swede were copping the re-make's riffs, while Lou Reed picked up the album's producer and guitar player for his classic Berlin project. Now that's influencing that which influenced you! Still "Polar Bear" is pretty amazing and this is an album you can play at parties and keep people's attention the way Andy Mackay's In Search of Eddie Riff serves that purpose well. The inclusion of Mott ...
