Black Stone Cherry: Chris Robertson (vocals, guitars, slide guitar); Ben Wells (guitars, electric sitar, background vocals); Jon Lawhon (electric bass, background vocals); John Fred Young (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Reese Wynans (Hammond b-3 organ). Proving that old music can become new again, young Edmonton, Kentucky quartet Black Stone Cherry surface with a debut album that recalls the peaks of grunge-flecked 1990s alt-rock, from Soundgarden to Stone Temple Pilots. Lead singer/guitarist Chris Robertson could certainly cover for anyone from Scott Weiland to Scott Stapp in a pinch, and though his vocal stylings are what will spark comparisons to earlier outfits, the band refuses to choke up on balladry, delivering a series of concussive, hard-rocking belts to the backside, most notable of which are leadoff track "Rain Wizard," the reckless "Backwoods Gold," and an impatient retelling of the Yardbirds' classic, "Shapes of Things." The debut album from youthful Kentucky rockers Black Stone Cherry meanders comfortably somewhere between metal and Southern rock. Black Stone Cherry has what it takes to be considered hard rock and Southern rock. Songs with titles like "Lonely Train," "Tired of the Rain," and "Rollin' On" and their somewhat predictable lyrics land the formula of Southern rock. Heavy distortion and gritty, brooding vocals reminiscent of Godsmack's Sully Erna lay down the format for alternative metal. Black Stone Cherry does what a lot of bands in the new century of alternative metal would like to -- find a new sound. The album never gets boring and is full of great riffs and a thunderous rhythm section. Lead singer Chris Robertson's vocals are surprisingly mature and soulful and the band's lead guitar (Robertson and Ben Wells) is impressive. "Shapes of Things," a cover of the Yardbirds chestnut, is a standout on the album. The tone, the rhythm, and the vocals are unique -- and if Black Stone Cherry keeps heading in this direction, the band will surely be able to separate itself from the influx of other bands who have been riding on the post-grunge alternative metal circuit since the '90s. The same goes for "Tired of the Rain," which features some of the best guitar work on the album, from a choppy riff to blues-infused licks and solo -- it's anything but bland. The real clincher of this song, as well as with "Rollin' On," is the use of a B-3 organ from guest artist Reece Wynans. It has all the charm of nostalgia, without being boring or forced. There's no doubt that Black Stone Cherry has talent, and they are onto something. Black Stone Cherry proves the band is diverse in their influences and goals. The Southern rock twist and the occasional Merle Haggard reference are a really solid start, but at times, the album comes across as a little too generic for what the band is capable of. Black Stone Cherry has more in them than to become just another alternative metal band in the now very post-grunge era. ~ Megan FryeKerrang (Magazine) (p.49) - "[B]rilliant songwriting crossed with brilliant musicianship. Clever, storytelling lyrics add to this rare treat..." Black Stone Cherry Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The KINGS of post-grunge.. One of the most exiting, upcoming talent who hail all the way from Kentucky USA... this band comprises genres affiliated with Southern rock, Post-grunge and Hard Rock... any way you want to look at this four piece music group there is no doubting that the 5 years they spent making this album was worth the wait for fans right around the world.. Huh? I really don't get all the comparisons to SKynyrd, Zeppelin, GnR, etc., that people keep showering this band with. The music isn't bad, but nothing special, but the vocalist makes the whole thing sound more like Silverchair than anybody else, with his droning grunge vocals. I love the part of the review above where it says, "He can do anyone from Scott Stapp to Scott Weiland in a pinch1" Yeah, ain't that about like "running the whole gamut from A to B?" Also, some people (Yankees I'm sure) assume that just because the band is from Kentucky, they're playing washboards and mandolins, and so they start with the Skynyrd talk. Nope, nope, nope. You believe that, you're in for a letdown, friend. Submitted by David Wayne Holland (Hawesville, KY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.

Enetertaining but... This album hits you hard rite off the start with rain wizard and lonely train. But as the cd goes on, it just started to lose its "edge", but still is a first rockin album from BSC and I cant wait till their second album. Rock n Roll The Way It's Meant To Be These guys come out of the backwoods of Kentucky, and immediately put themselves up in rarefied air. Meaning they rock with the best. One of the best debut discs to come out in quite a while. The first four songs all kick you in the face. If you're not impressed by then, turn it off, put it away, and realize you have bad taste in rock-n-roll music! In fact, tracks 3 and 4, Lonely Train and Maybe Someday, are both so good, I would rank them up in the category of "All Time Best Rock Songs". They are just that good! Its like Heartbreaker and Livin' Lovin' Woman, by Zeppelin...two back to back songs that just amaze! Not comparing them, sound wise, to Zeppelin, but just the quality of the songs, reminds of those great moments. And if you ever get a chance to see them live...do it!! They rock the house with high energy and a great show. 'Nuff said!! Submitted by GORDONW (SNELLVILLE, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Black Stone Cherry
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed ...

| | Joe Bonamassa Blues Deluxe CD (2003)
Black Stone Cherry
$13.89 Personnel: Joe Bonamassa (vocals, guitar); Jon Paris (harmonica); Benny harrison (Hammond B-3 organ); Eric Czar (electric bass); Kenny Kramme (drums). Recorded at Unique Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Harris Cohen. As the electric guitar ace Joe Bonamassa was so strongly inspired by blues and blues-oriented six-stringers (i.e., Clapton, Johnny Winter), many of his fans would politely pester him about doing a disc of blues standards. Originally done as a lark, the results of such a session were deemed by Bonamassa good enough to be released--hence, BLUES DELUXE, on which he covers some lesser-known songs and includes three originals. Of course, his fierce, scorching guitar is center stage. If axe-men such as Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, and Buddy ...
