| | Kula Shaker K CD (1996)
Revenge Of King
$12.79 Inital pressings of the U.S. release of K included a bonus CD single, TATTVA LUCKY 13 MIX.
The Britpop quartet Kula Shaker appears to have raided the closets of its favorite bands in the making of its debut album. K contains a bluesy, retro ambience very much like The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. The full-throttled guitars sound like those of Oasis. And a hefty dose of Hindu mysticism runs rampant throughout--a la Cornershop.
But Kula Shaker manages to make something original of all those borrowed parts. Rising above its influences, Kula Shaker creates a niche of Britpop in which transcendence is the goal. Amidst the blues-drenched guitars and the Hindi chanting, the band is hard at work building something spiritual and sensual. Kula Shaker isn't afraid of a tamboura, using the exotic instrument on several tracks. Nor is it afraid to be linked with the Grateful Dead, eulogizing that band in the track "Grateful When You're Dead/Jerry Was There." But Kula Shaker ...
| | Steve Hillage Motivation Radio CD (1977) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Japan
Revenge Of King
$10.25 Those in tune with being transported through music will want to station themselves near the speakers for Motivation Radio. Call it the "light side of the moon," this album draws the listener into its own astral plane with a glossy and gauzy sound similar to Pink Floyd without the darkness, or Alan Parsons Project without the dorkiness. The new age/space ideology isn't far removed from Gong's original alternate reality (remember the Octave Doctors?), spelled out best during the album's true point of transmigration, "Saucer Surfing." Hillage's guitar work is typically transcendent, Giraudy's keyboards a vital component (note the Doctor Who-isms of "Searching for the Spark"), and Joe Blocker's drums a frequent breath of change. Steve Hillage doesn't have the vocal presence to reach out to listeners; at best, he can meet them halfway. Motivation Radio works as well as it does because it draws listeners to that halfway point (and beyond), steering them with spiritual signposts and rewarding them with rapturous music. It's a remarkably smooth journey, more accessible than L, if equally cosmic. Again, it was an idiomatic cover tune, "Not ...
| | Cactus Restrictions CD (1971)
Revenge Of King
$9.55 With a mixture of members from Vanilla Fudge, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and the Amboy Dukes, it's hard to believe that Cactus didn't really succeed in their time. Often derided for being second-rate boogie rock, the band simply did what it did, and part of the allure of the style is its sloppy, second-rate nature. This 1971 release may not see the band at their peak, but it surely showcases the occasionally thundering rhythm section of Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice. Why a song like "Token Chokin'" was never a hit and why it has yet to be embraced by the classic rock-loving public ...

| | Lyle Lovett Smile CD (2003)
Revenge Of King
$12.65 By 2003, fans of Lyle Lovett had grown hungry for any offerings from their hero, as his last album of new material was 1996's THE ROAD TO ENSENADA. While awaiting the next batch of compositions from Lovett's witty pen, they'd been treated to a live album (LIVE IN TEXAS) and a double record featuring covers of tunes by other great Texan songwriters (STEP INSIDE THIS HOUSE). Taking a slighty different track, SMILE is a collection of songs the lanky Lovett recorded for various movie soundtracks over the previous 10 years or so. While Lovett obviously didn't pen such classics as "The Summer Wind," "Blue Skies," or the title track himself, he brings his signature laconic vocal style to the fore so convincingly that you'll find yourself campaigning for giving him honorary composer's credit.
Collection Of Songs Culled Fr. Various Soundtracks.
