The title of this album has two meanings. The music by the septet -- cornetist Ed Polcer, trombonist Bill Allred, clarinetist Tommy Gwaltney, pianist John Eaton, rhythm guitarist Steve Jordan, bassist Van Perry and drummer Barrett Deems -- is very much in the style of Eddie Condon's "Chicago jazz" ensembles. Plus, Polcer had just concluded a long tenure as the head of the house band at the club Condon's. The six standards include "Nobody's Sweetheart," "My Honey's Lovin' Arms" and "Put On Your Old Grey Bonnet," and are given Dixieland-ish treatment; these renditions (ranging from six minutes to a little over eight) are long enough for there to be plenty of spontaneous solos. Shelly Manne's Quintet was recorded extensively at San Francisco's Black Hawk club for three nights in 1959. Although not the most significant group that the drummer led, this edition (with trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, pianist Victor Feldman, and bassist Monty Budwig) was certainly capable of playing high-quality bebop. A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." Quite possibly this is the definitive Ted Brown set to acquire; certainly it is highly recommended to lovers of straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further into free-jazz territory as the tune progresses. The angular bop of the title track is offset by adventurous soloing and unique instrumentation (flute and tuba add to the sonic palette here, along with guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer and drummer Jack DeJohnette). Blythe also knows how to keep things groovy, as the Latin-infused "Down San Diego Way" shows, with its interlocking webs of percussion. This is challenging, engaging jazz of the first order that still sounds fresh decades after its release.
