This 70-minute film covers the years of struggling before Led Zeppelin: the session studios and amateur band scene of the 1960s. It then focusses on the modest success of outfits like The Yardbirds and Band Of Joy, and eventually culminates in the formation of Led Zeppelin, the first two albums, and international acclaim and popularity. It features rare musical performances, and obscure footage of rare interviews and rarely seen photographs. The program is injected with review, comment, criticism and insight from; Alan Clayson, former Melody Maker journalist, Chris Welch; ex-1960s NME editor, Keith Altham; Yardbirds guitarist, Chris Dreja; and many more. Documenting what Led Zeppelin was like before Led Zeppelin, this film examines the context and origin of one of rock's most influential bands. Exploring the band scene of the early 1960s, including the success of predecessors the Yardbirds and Band of Joy, ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES traces the group's initial formation and rise to the top. Interviews, performance footage, and rare photographs are combined with commentary from experts such as Melody Maker's Chris Welch, NME's Keith Altham, and former Yardbird Chris Dreja. Led Zeppelin - Origin Of The Species film
$8.95 Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass instrument); Bill Ward (drums). With Paranoid, Black Sabbath perfected the formula for their lumbering heavy metal. On its follow-up, Master of Reality, the group merely repeated the formula, setting the stage for a career of recycling the same sounds and riffs. But on Master of Reality Sabbath still were fresh and had a seemingly endless supply of crushingly heavy riffs to bludgeon their audiences into sweet, willing oblivion. If the album is a showcase for anyone, it is Tony Iommi, who keeps the album afloat with a series of slow, loud riffs, the best of which -- "Sweet Leaf" and "Children of the Grave" among them -- rank among his finest playing. Taken in tandem with the more consistent Paranoid, Master of Reality forms the core of Sabbath's canon. There are a few stray necessary tracks scattered throughout the group's other early-'70s albums, but Master of ...

Led Zeppelin - Origin Of The Species review
$9.15 Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass instrument); Bill Ward (drums). Black Sabbath, Vol. 4 is just a cut below its two indisputably classic predecessors, as it begins to run out of steam -- and memorable riffs -- toward the end. However, it finds Sabbath beginning to experiment successfully with their trademark sound on tracks like the ambitious, psychedelic-tinged, multi-part "Wheels of Confusion," the concise, textured "Tomorrow's Dream," and the orchestrated piano ballad "Changes" (even if the latter's lyrics cross the line into triteness). But the classic Sabbath sound is still very much in evidence; the crushing "Supernaut" is one of the heaviest tracks the band ever recorded. ~ Steve Huey While Black Sabbath's 1972 release VOL. 4 didn't contain a renowned heavy metal anthem as PARANOID's ...

Led Zeppelin - Origin Of The Species movie DVD
$14.65 Ten Years After: Alvin Lee (vocals, guitar); Chick Churchill (organ); Leo Lyons (bass); Ric Lee (drums). Recorded live at The Fillmore East, New York, New York between 1968 and 1970. Includes liner notes by Ric Lee. This superbly recorded double disc (the original engineer was Eddie Kramer, best-known for his work with Hendrix) captured over a weekend worth of dates in February 1970 at the venerable New York City venue catches the Brit boogie quartet at the peak of their powers. These shows were sandwiched between their triumphant Woodstock set and the release of Cricklewood Green, generally considered the band's best work. They find the group primed through years of roadwork, as well as obviously excited to be playing in front of an appreciative N.Y.C. crowd. Kicking off with one of Bill Graham's patented individual-member intros, the group winds their way through the ominous riff of "Love Like a Man." Mixing extended and rocking versions of blues ...

The reissue has remixed and remastered sound and a lavish booklet. Two discs. Two hours. Seven songs.
