Starting with the awesome "I Don't Need Society" and ending with the anthemic "Explorer," D.R.I.'s debut album was an important stepping stone in the evolution of both metal and hardcore. D.R.I. drew a line in the sand between the American hardcore bands who wanted to stick close to the original punk sound and bands who wanted to branch out into heavy metal territory. D.R.I.'s use of thunderous heavy metal drumming and California hardcore songwriting made Dirty Rotten LP something special, putting them in a category with Corrosion of Conformity and Suicidal Tendencies as the forefront of a new movement. Their angry lyrics revolved around the usual political and social ills, but their approach was a staggering blend of pre-grindcore blastbeats (that particular drumming style may have even had its first recorded instance here), blunt and simplistic guitar riffs, and an acidic vocal workout from the young Kurt Brecht. His charismatic shout was the tone-deaf glue that kept the band together, especially in the face of abbreviated songs and sloppy playing. With some humorous lyrics, endless enthusiasm, and a penchant for short song times (only one song makes it past the two-minute mark), D.R.I.'s debut was a landmark album that paved the way for exciting new hardcore bands to spring up in its wake. ~ Bradley Torreano
Every story has a beginning and every legend has to start somewhere. For DRI, crossover pioneers, it began with the release of The Dirty Rotten LP. It refined and reshaped Hardcore, crafting a weapon of high energy, fast as hell, emotionally charged punk rock that altered the face of the hardcore scene forever. Presented once again in all its original glory, artwork, track listing and sound, it remains a testament to the scene it gave birth to. This is where legend began, this is The Dirty Rotten LP.
D.R.I. (Punk): Kurt Brecht (vocals); Spike Cassidy (guitar); Dennis Johnson (bass guitar); Eric Brecht (drums).

| | Dave Carter Tanglewood Tree CD (2000)
Dirty Rotten LP
$13.55 Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer's follow-up to their acclaimed 1998 debut, Tanglewood Tree is a truly potent mix of outstanding country harmonies, exemplary musicianship, and complex narratives. The compositions here provide ample evidence of Carter's much deserved reputation in folk circles as one of the most talented singer/songwriters, as he colors an amazingly rich rural landscape, mixing elements of Native American mysticism with tales of the paradoxes of love and the musings of people in transition, always treating his characters with an honest, understated dignity. Featuring a much fuller sound than their previous record When I Go, Carter and Grammer employ session men and the use of a professional studio for the first time, with the results being a texturally rich collaboration that perfectly showcase Carter's pleasant finger-picking guitar style, as well as his banjo and Hammond organ flourishes. Tracy Grammer plays a larger role than on previous releases, as she sings lead on four tracks in addition to adding beautiful violin and mandolin accompaniment. The sunny, gently rolling "Happytown (All Right With Me)" is one of the more unabashedly melodic pieces, with each vocal turn yielding pure folk-pop bliss. Finger-picked guitar ballads, like "Farewall to Saint Dolores" or the bittersweet "Walking Away From Caroline," reveal a songwriter who is easily adept at avoiding the more maudlin tendencies of many of his contemporaries. The wit and humor in Carter's songwriting can almost be overshadowed by the starkness in tales like "Cat-Eye Willie Claims His Lover," a tragic account of a man who wins a woman in a card game and ends up being killed by her. Still, Carter creates lighter moments with the lyrical and melodic nod to the ...
| | Cold Chisel East CD (1980) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Enhanced CD; Australia
Dirty Rotten LP
$32.85 This digitally-remastered 15-track release by Australian pub rockers Cold Chisel features "Standing On The Outside," "Rising Sun," and "My Turn To Cry," and includes the bonus tracks "Pay Day In A Pub," "Hands Out Of My Pocket," and "Party's Over."
Cold Chisel's following had been steadily building for a number of years when their third -- and slickest to date -- album, East, broke them through to a wider audience in 1980. More commercial without compromising on the rawness of their roots, the band hit pay dirt with a clutch of songs it seemed everybody could get into. The virtuosity of the Chisel's musical abilities still comes through on songs that were, nevertheless, compact enough to be radio-ready. The up-tempo loner anthem "Standing on the Outside," the enchanting ballad and breakthrough single "Choirgirl," and the tongue-in-cheek "Ita" all had the hooks to land a singalong audience. ...

$16.59 The blueprint for Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2 is the same as the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- with compilers balancing a few downtempo tracks by a varying cast of vocal artists (Coldplay, the Specials, Black Box Recorder, Nelly Furtado, Bebel Gilberto, Radiohead) with electronica specialists (here, usual suspects like Boards of Canada, Groove Armada, Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Fila Brazillia, and Röyksopp). ~ John Bush
