| | Rise Against Sufferer & The Witness CD Rise Against Discography of CDs
Competent pop-punk brushed with adult bathos is the bill of fare on Rise Against's 2006 album, THE SUFFERER AND THE WITNESS. The Chicago group have everything working in their favor here, with top-shelf production by genre veterans Bill Stevenson (All, Descendents, Black Flag) and Jason Livermore (The Ataris), and an appearance in the 2005 film LORDS OF DOGTOWN building momentum for the group. Musically, Rise Against reside at the intersection of aggression, melody, experience, and emotion, merging the heart-on-sleeve sounds of mid-'80s DC hardcore with professionally solid pop a la Weezer. Singer Tim McIlrath's dusky holler is the uniting factor, carrying songs like the anthemic "Prayer of the Refugee" over the finish line with determination and grit.
UK version of their 2006 release features one bonus track: 'Built To Last'. Chicago's Rise Against is anything but a single-minded musical outfit. An astounding fusion of unhinged power, ear-grasping melodies, stimulating lyrics and the ability to reach audiences in both underground and mainstream circles, they have redefined the rules. The Sufferer & The Witness, their fourth album, continues to build upon the solid punk foundation - it is a striking collection, with Rise Against using elements from spoken word, expanded balladry, and simply plodding forward with a faster, harder, louder ethic. Polydor.Rolling Stone (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "With even more shout-along moments and topsy-turvy action, it's rousing, tightly wound and could be the album of the summer for anybody who needs a good yowl in their lives." Spin (p.85) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Guitars rev up and wind down, rhythms blitz forward, then ease off, and frontman Tim McIlrath is just as comfortable crooning an emo power ballad as screaming..." Entertainment Weekly (p.67) - "[T]heir relentless riffs, howling screamo choruses, and pissed-off rhetoric clearly connect with a new generation..." -- Grade: B+ Q (p.115) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Raw and splenetic, their wild-eyed anthems burn with anti-establishment fury. There's no let-up in the pace." Alternative Press (p.204) - 4 out of 5 -- "SUFFERER delivers blow after blow, polished to perfection by producer Bill Stevenson..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.51) - "[Their] different styles mix together to form something both gut-wrenching and life-affirming." | | Django Reinhardt All Star Sessions CD (2001)
Sufferer & The Witness songs
$8.85 The studio sessions within this CD were produced by Charles Delauney in Paris during the late '30s, when a number of prominent Americans were either passing through or temporarily taking up residence in Europe. Django Reinhardt was a relative newcomer to jazz, but quickly became a leading player on the continent, and is present on four very different sessions in this collection. A quartet led by cornetist Rex Stewart includes fellow Ellington veterans Barney Bigard on clarinet and bassist Billy Taylor, though the Americans and their gypsy guitarist eschew the Ellington songbook and find their own sound in a date dominated by originals written by Stewart or Taylor. Reinhardt is prominently featured as a soloist and proves himself in ensembles as well as backing others' solos. The only standard present is a swinging "I Know That You Know." The guitarist is part of Michel Warlop's orchestra with special guest Coleman Hawkins for a 1935 session, though the rather square arrangements haven't stood the test of time too well. The highlight of this date is "Star Dust," which includes Hawkins with only the rhythm section of Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli (on piano), and bassist Eugene d'Hellemmes. Reinhardt and Grappelli (again, exclusively on piano) are both present in an all-star ensemble led by Hawkins, which also features Benny Carter (on both alto sax and trumpet). Carter's swinging arrangements make these four tracks a joy to hear, though Reinhardt only solos on "Honeysuckle Rose." Although most of these selections have appeared regularly on a number of earlier CDs and LPs, this current collection is worth acquiring, especially for the small-group ...
