Galant songs
$12.95 Let's just say that at the end of this unlikely meeting between pianist Satoko Fujii and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida (of the group Ruins) at the 2002 Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville, fans of the latter were very happy, fans of the former very puzzled. A few months earlier Fujii had introduced her new quartet, which featured Yoshida (along with her husband, Natsuki Tamura, on trumpet and bassist Takeharu Hayakawa), but the group's debut album, Vulcan, as excellent as it is, doesn't prepare for the onslaught of Toh-Kichi. For this duo date -- a first -- pianist and drummer devised a set of compositions (new and old) and improvisations that takes the form of a classic Ruins concert: fast-paced, hyperactive, at times downright ludicrous. Case in point: The zipper fly solo in "Arabiondo," stupid and unashamed in a very entertaining way. Hearing the delicate and frail-looking ...

Galant album
$15.65 In addition to being one of contemporary jazz's top indie labels, Heads Up International has delved brilliantly into the vast riches of African music these past years, bringing masters from that continent to a greater stateside awareness via its Heads Up Africa series. South Africa has gotten most of the attention over the years, but as singer, guitarist, and socially conscious composer Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi shows, Zimbabwe has music equally as compelling, vibrant, and rhythmic. Over the past 25 years, Tuku has been such a force in the musical landscape of the South African region that his name ...

Galant songs
$11.15 As with many relationships, it all starts at a bar. Shanna, a newcomer to the Portland scene, went out looking for a great guitar player. In walks Hawk, a player with some of Portland's best bands. Little did they know that a short trip to New York City would start a musical love affair that shows no sign of ending. Both prolific songwriters looking for just the right person to play their songs; someone with no fear of the road and an insatiable need to gig. "Shanna and The Hawk" is a four piece alt-country band. They do things a little differently. The quartet has an Americana feel and a rock attitude. The dark brooding rock singing of Shanna sets the tone, then the lonesome harp and the melancholy Dobro combine with Hawk's no nonsense guitar to form a truly hypnotic American groove. With Haak's folk-country feel, and Shanna's blues influence, the sound comes out in the middle creating Blues-Twang, a very "down to earth acoustic sound" (Casco Bay Weekly). After joining singing and songwriting forces it was easy to round up Rob Sylvain and Joe Bloom to add a dynamic touch to the music. Rob's great Dobro playing is matched by Mighty Mo-Joe Bloom's extremely powerful harmonica licks. Our newest member rounds out the sound with Kris Day, from King Memphis, on Stand-up bass.Review from indiemusic.com:"I tried, but I can't pick a favorite track; it depends on your mood. Every time I listen, I find myself locking onto a different cut, playing it over and over. Right now, it's "When Love Is Gone." Another time, it was "Married On The Moon." I've listened to every song at least ten times, and I know I'll be wearing this one out. Underwood and Kallweit are both competent musicians with a from-the-heart songwriting style that is certain to attract a following in the indie music scene.I could easily write a 1000-word review of this CD, but the music speaks for itself. Give it a listen, buy the CD, and tell 'em Kenny Hart sent you. You won't regret it, I promise."Rest of article by Kenny Hart: http://singing-songwriter.kennyhart.com/2005/10/worth-listen-shanna-hawk.htmlIT Rock Mag Review:"As I opened the door to the Break Away Lounge one night two plus years ago, I had to shake off a shiver. It wasn't cold, as it was summer. It was a reaction from the rich tones I was hearing. The sound of these musical stylings provoked me to question if it was an old Country Blues recording from the Jukebox, but my reaction snuffed the notion and I quickly assessed that the sound was definitely live. I asked myself out loud, " Who is singing that song? Whiskey June, written and vocalized by Shanna Underwood, is an audio tattoo, of sorts, that impressed itself upon my inner ear. I walked through the secondary door and into the lounge area to catch the end of the song. That was my first impression of Shanna Underwood.Haakon "The Hawk" Kallweit is an accomplished musician. The first time I saw him play he beamed with a big smile on his face, and sounding smooth as butter. Kallweit has a voice and takes the lead vocal with the same effortless enthusiasm. What proves also to be an asset is Kallweit's sense of humor. Kallweit has a way of cracking up his audiences while on stage. If he went on too long the spectacle would surely include members of the audience rolling on the floor.Shanna and the Hawk put their music together with a simple recipe, and it often takes a slow rolling Country Blues pace. But from the first breath of each song... they cook!"Rest of article by Mark Rankin at : http://www.itrockrag.com/archive.php?amonth=10&ayear=2004&asection=therankinfilesNight ...
