Al Silver started a small record pressing plant out of a Greenwich Village basement in 1946, and he gradually turned to the recording side of things, as well, creating two record imprints, Herald and Ember, by 1952. Silver had an uncanny ear for hits, and at least two of his Ember Records releases, the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Night" and the Silhouettes' "Get a Job," both of which are included on this short ten-song sampler of Ember's '50s catalog, are undeniable doo wop classics. At around 35 minutes in length, this set is too brief to be anything more than a stone skipping over the surface of Ember's vocal group releases, but at a budget price, it will get you started. ~ Steve Leggett Great Labels Of The Doo Wop Era: Ember Records Music Great Labels Of The Doo Wop Era: Ember Records Songs | 1. | In the Still of the Night - The Five Satins |

$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. ...

Great Labels Of The Doo Wop Era: Ember Records songs
$13.35 The title of this collection and the beautiful photographs chosen by Jon Wozencroft for the packaging hint at something bucolic and down to earth, framing this electronic and rather abstract music in a paradoxical setting. After all, art is often born out of contrasts. Field Recordings 1995-2002 culls rare EPs and compilation tracks by one of experimental electronica's prominent names, Fennesz. Served like a platter of hors d'oeuvres to new fans waiting for a follow-up to Endless Summer, it has its highs and lows. Comp contributions often become occasions to try something different. Fennesz makes no exception. Not quite as defined as his album cuts, the tracks here chronicle the sidesteps that led him from Hotel Paral.lel to Endless Summer. The album opens with "Good Man," a new piece completed for this collection. Very dense and made of alternating sections of noise-drenched ...
| | Ronny Jordan After 8 CD (2004)
Great Labels Of The Doo Wop Era: Ember Records album
$10.95 Signed to the N-Coded label after leaving Blue Note, guitarist and composer Ronny Jordan is apparently reconsidering his past directions. Where Jordan fiercely applied and defended his gritty fusion of smooth jazz, funk, and hip-hop throughout the '90s, it appears that After 8 backs off from the ferocity of his earlier music. Gone are the duets with Mos Def and the presence of DJ Spinna, and in their place is elegantly played, stylishly wrought, sheen-filled smooth jazz. The drum loops are still present, but their jagged edges are glossed over and rounded. While it's true that Jordan was going for a late-night groove sound, one that employed more ...
