| | Rhythms Del Mundo: Cuba CD (2006)
Best Of Desi Arnaz
$15.65 Turning the covers album concept on its head, Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba doesn't set a varied group of northern artists loose on the music made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club, but instead sets the Club's members lose on the northerners' own songs. Now that's an inspired idea, and all to aid charities assisting the victims of natural disasters and raising awareness of climate change. However, to call this a covers album is a bit misleading, as most of the songs feature the original vocals, and occasionally some of the original instrumentation, but it's not a remix project either, as the Social Club add their own music to the original recordings. So, it's a grand fusion of Cuban and northern sounds. And eclectic to boot, with songs contributed by such international artists as Quincy Jones, Sting and U2, as well as the likes of Radiohead and Coldplay. But to give the set a real frisson, the Social Club also took on such younger, ...

Best Of Desi Arnaz
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead ...

| | Howard Alden Concord Jazz Guitar Collective CD (1995)
Best Of Desi Arnaz
$9.59 The Concord Jazz Guitar Collective was a 1995 project that united Howard Alden with fellow guitarists and Concord artists Jimmy Bruno and Frank Vignola. For Concord, a three-guitar date was hardly unprecedented; back in 1974, the label had brought Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd, and Herb Ellis together as the Great Guitars. Despite the fact that they all play the same instrument, Alden, Bruno, and Vignola prove compatible on this outing, which also employs Jim Hughart on upright bass and Colin Bailey on drums. Although Bruno tends to be more aggressive and forceful than Alden, he can be quite lyrical ...
| | Sarah Vaughan & The Count Basie Orchestra CD (2002)
Best Of Desi Arnaz
$9.65 Digitally remastered using 20-bit K2 Super Coding System technology.
Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology.
Sarah Vaughan is accompanied by her regular rhythm section of the early '80s (with pianist George Gaffney, bassist Andy Simpkins, and drummer Harold Jones), guitarist Freddie Green, and the Count Basie horn sections on this enjoyable date, which has been reissued on CD. The arrangements by Sammy Nestico and Allyn Ferguson unfortunately do not leave much room for any of the Basie sidemen to solo, but Sassy is in superb form. She ...

| | Link Quartet Italian Playboys CD (2004)
Best Of Desi Arnaz
$12.15 Italian Playboys includes nine original songs from the classic 6T's beat styled title track to the introspective After and Once Again, along with a selection of rarely attempted covers including the heavy funk of Jon Lord on Rubber Monkey, an uplifting interpretation of Jack McDuff's Briar Patch (an alternate version will also appear on the forthcoming McDuff tribute album from Scufflin' Records), and a scorching slice out of the library classic Move, Move, Move.Italian Playboys also features Doug Roberson of mod fave The Diplomats of Solid Sound (USA) on guitar for Portofino Vespa Rider, Eddie Roberts of deep funk superstars The New Mastersounds (UK) on sitar for Spider Baby, and DJ extraordinaire NINFA (Irma Records Mo'Plen series) lending her vocal talents to the Gus Gus hit Ladyshave and released as a single on Record Kicks (October 5).Italian Playboys follows the seminal Beat.It (2002, Hammondbeat), two USA tours with the last stop headlining the world reknowned MODchicago weekender, numerous European festivals, and several score contributions to 6T's spy-revivalist film Wilson Chance (2004, Bunzendahl Brothers, USA) and soundtrack counterpart Wilson Chance: The Sound of Danger (2004, Hammondbeat).Italian Playboys songs have already been featured this summer on the BBC's Mark Radcliffe ...

| | Breathe: The Relaxing Jazz Piano CD (2007)
Best Of Desi Arnaz
$8.19 Looking for some laid-back piano jazz? Telarc's Relaxing Jazz Piano is a good place to start. There are soft and reflective essays by Cyrus Chestnut, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, and McCoy Tyner; improvisations by the Jacques Loussier Trio based on Beethoven and Satie; and a thoughtful 4 a.m. rendition of Gershwin's "Prelude No. 2" by Michel Camilo. Brubeck's "Lullaby" carries a whiff of a Gershwin berceuse; its habañera rhythm invokes Darius Milhaud's Saudades do Brasil. Contrast is provided by two comparatively sanguine and upbeat performances: "It's Only a Paper Moon" by George Shearing and a surprisingly funky rendering of "Captain ...
