Black metal purists Tangorodrim believe in the power of vinyl, on which a limited number of 666 copies of their Unholy and Unlimited album were pressed, with no plans for a CD version anytime soon. Hailing from Israel, of all places, they also believe in the power of absolute primitivism, taking the low road of heavy metal de-evolution in a bid for the sort of sonic infamy which bred underground metal heroes like Venom, Hellhammer, and Bathory before them. As such, with its distinctly lo-fi production values, Unholy and Unlimited is one of those "love it if you want to make yourself love it" propositions -- it's so bad it's great! Mrakobes' tortured barks sound less frightening than funny, and technical execution is consistently kept to a frill-free minimum. And yet, even amidst such purposeful chaos, one encounters some damn good riffing in inspired head-bangers like "Patrol of Death," "Priestkiller," and "Figures." In other words, Tangorodrim have all the makings of the above cited anti-legends of metal, whose seemingly humble, fault-filled creations were later vindicated as hugely influential, making utter fools of initially dismissive journalists. And who would dare make that mistake? -- ha! -- a contradiction in every sense of the word, Tangorodrim's legendary status, therefore, already seems ensured. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Unholy And Unlimited album
$9.39 Dutch originals the Gathering have built a rabid following over the years, meaning there's every reason to justify a release such as 2005's Accessories: Rarities & B-Sides, which compiles a total of 27 non-album cuts from all stages of the group's remarkably consistent career. However, even the greatest of the band's B-sides, outtakes, and leftovers are still just that: secondary, possibly even substandard goods -- meaning that protracted exposure to a full two discs' worth of them could leave even the most devout followers a little disappointed. Just a warning. Now to the contents: disc one focuses on the Gathering's B-sides, including several live versions of album favorites performed both with ("Strange Machines," "Leaves") and without ("In Motion #1," "Amity," "Leaves" again) the exotic backing of a symphony orchestra; revealing, ...

Unholy And Unlimited songs
$13.75 For metalheads, the early to mid-2000s went down in history as a time in which the United States dominated metalcore, hardcore, and screamo while Europe dominated the death metal/black metal field as well as the power metal revival/progressive metal scene. And Europe was equally dominant when it came to goth metal; if, in the early to mid-2000s, one came across a metal band that had strong goth leanings, a definite Lacuna Coil influence, and a female lead singer with an ethereal vocal style, it wasn't necessarily a European band but was likely a European band. Germany's Eyes of Eden, in fact, fit that description to a T on their debut album, Faith. The brains behind this album is producer, guitarist, and songwriter Waldemar Sorychta, who is known for his work with Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, Despair, and Sentenced and is staunchly goth metal-oriented throughout this 45-minute CD (which was recorded from 2004-2006 ...

Unholy And Unlimited music CDs
$14.05 In the dark, murky realm of death metal, perhaps no band is more worthy of taking hold Excalibur's hilt and leading the next charge down the mountain into fiery oblivion than Poland's Decapitated, and one need look no further for proof than on the band's 2000 debut, Winds of Creation. Much has been made of the band's supposed "tender" age (the average age of the members was around 18 when Winds of Creation was released), and in fact, early on, they were slighted from the respect they would have otherwise been due because of this; however, it must be remembered that a certain gruff-throated, engine-wristed young vocalist/guitarist for another certain popular metal band was only 18 when his band's debut, Kill 'Em All, was released, and needless to say, as is the case here, tender had nothing to do with it. Ironically, in the eyes of many metal fans, Winds of Creation is almost as much of an astonishingly groundbreaking album as Kill 'Em All was in its day. To begin with, the band has a seemingly effortless understanding and command of both their instruments and death metal's highly stylistic requirements. The mind-bendingly blistering technical virtuosity would be amazing in a group of older musicians, much less for a band of teenagers, and better yet, they refrain from slipping into the routine, over-the-top expediency so common in their genre; the guys in Decapitated truly seem committed to getting death metal out of its then current rut and taking it to another level. Plus, the songwriting is extremely solid; even in the first listen, songs such as the manically frenzied "Blessed" and the beautifully haunting "Dance Macabre" stand out and away from the strange dissonance of "The First Damned" and the call-and-response riffage of "Nine Steps." The band even found time to throw in ...
