Gene Chandler has enjoyed some widely spaced hits across several different styles and musical eras, which means that any truly representative compilation of his most popular work has got to be very thorough and very ambitious. This 20-song collection, offering just under an hour of material, isn't really either -- but it still has some listening virtues. The producers give a very sketchy overview of Chandler's early-'60s history with Vee-Jay Records, represented by just three songs, the million-seller "Duke of Earl," of course, and the more modest successes "Rainbow" and "Man's Temptation." These may have been his most successful singles, but they weren't the only ones he did with the label to chart, so there's that problem with the opening tracks here. However, his debut, THE SLIM SHADY LP, contained clever rhymes and even the occasional innovation. His sophomore effort, THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP, proved that Eminem was no fluke, but instead a legitimate rap visionary.

The core of the Ford Blues Band is a quartet featuring drummer/singer Patrick Ford (Robben's brother), guitarist/singer Volker Strifler, bassist Dewayne Pate, and harpist/vocalist Andy Just. For this project, a horn section and keyboards are added with one appearance apiece by Mark and Gabriel Ford. The music is always blues-based even when it is soul, R&B-ish, an easy-to-take lecture on the blues ("One Man's Opinion"), and one song reminiscent of retro-swing. Although none of the players are individual virtuosos or innovators, the Ford Blues Band puts on a program full of variety, sincere feelings, and solid, danceable blues.
