Every year, countless people from different parts of the United States move to Nashville with one goal in mind: to have a career in country music. They don't necessarily sing, write songs or play an instrument; perhaps they are interested in A&R, publicity or promotions. But whether their goal is performing or working in a behind-the-scenes capacity, so many of the music-minded people who live in Nashville have country music (or at least some type of Americana or roots rock) on the brain. There are many exceptions, however -- and Forget Cassettes is a definite exception. This Nashville-based group has nothing whatsoever to do with country, Americana or roots rock; the focus of Salt, their second album, is darkly introspective but often combustible alt rock/indie rock that draws on direct or indirect influences such as PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Lydia Lunch, Hole and Nirvana. But while lead singer/guitarist Beth Cameron has some of Amos' melodic and harmonic sensibilities, Forget Cassettes rocks much harder -- and like Harvey, the expressive Cameron favors a very stream-of-consciousness approach. Throughout the high-angst album, Cameron fluctuates between darkly brooding melodies and moments of angry, explosive release. Salt is an album of contrasts, and Cameron handles herself memorably well whether she is exercising restraint or wailing and screaming during the 2006 recording's more intense moments. Forget Cassettes' material is not groundbreaking and doesn't pretend to point alt rock or indie rock in any new directions, but it is nicely crafted and nicely executed (if a bit self-indulgent at times). And all things considered, Salt is a strong sophomore outing from the Nashville-based group. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
Salt music CDs
$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa Monica, a documentary called 400 Days shot during the Wildflowers tour -- a Blu-Ray edition of all 62 tracks on the five-CD version, a vinyl copy of the 1976 Official Live 'Leg LP, plus a book and lithograph, along with other assorted bonuses. Certainly, the deluxe edition lives up to its billing, offering enough extras to justify its price tag, but the standard edition is plenty generous as it is, serving up enough consistently strong music from throughout the decades, ...
| | Alice Cooper Love It To Death CD (1971) Gold
Salt songs
$18.74 Whereas Alice Cooper's first two studio albums, 1969's PRETTIES FOR YOU and 1970's EASY ACTION, tended more towards the trippy excesses of the hippie era, their next one, 1971's LOVE IT TO DEATH introduced the world to the heavy sound that Cooper would soon be taking to the top. With the invaluable production assistance of future Pink Floyd/Lou Reed cohort Bob Ezrin, LOVE IT TO DEATH proved Alice Cooper's first truly great album, and served as their commercial breakthrough.

| | Joe Walsh Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get CD (1973) Gold
Salt album
$18.74 "Rocky Mountain Way," the tune that opens Joe Walsh's sophomore release (and remains one of his best-known songs), is a textbook example of Walsh's strengths. The song is driven by a slinky hard rock groove that boasts crunchy, distorted guitars, barrelhouse piano, wiry solos, and a catchy, singalong chorus--proving Walsh's penchant for mixing rock elements and radio-ready accessibility with a sense of wit and fun. The rest of SMOKER YOU DRINK, PLAYER YOU GET follows suit, with the mid-tempo rock ballad "Bookends," the ...

| | Vintage Chill Vol. 2: Summer CD (2003)
Salt songs
$13.89 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixd by Beth Sereni.
Fans of the first volume in Kriztal's seasonal Vintage Chill series will not be disappointed with its second. Subtitled "Summer," the disc desires to be your deck party chill music. In fact, it goes so far as to plan such an event. "Music for wine lovers!" its front cover sticker screams. "Perfect for a party on the terrace!" Copy on the back sets a scene filled with chilled wine and relaxed guests, digging the bright sun and, assumedly, the groovy Vintage Chill beats. Said grooves are mainly of the downtempo, jazz-house variety. Vocalist Yukimi Nagano warms up Koop's bossa nova-influenced "Summer Sun," and Buscemi keeps things going with chopped-up Latin elements on the funky "Ramiro's Theme." Relative star power is provided by Thievery Corporation, which donates "Liberation Front" from 2002's Richest Man in Babylon. But while it's head nod-worthy, the track is also strangely bland. This feeling of pleasant detachment is representative of Vintage Chill's lesser moments. ...

| | Stevie Barr Along The Crooked Road CD (2007)
Salt songs
$13.59 First established on record as leader of the bluegrass band No Speed Limit, banjo player Stevie Barr went solo for the 2007 release Along the Crooked Road. It's not a conventional solo album in which the leader plays with a set or nearly set group of musicians, however. Instead, the 21 tracks were recorded with a rotating cast of friends from around his base of Galax, VA. It's not a conventional studio album, either, since -- in the words of Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz in the liner notes -- it was recorded "informally at various locations in contrast to formal or controlled studio settings." Also, while Barr handled banjo on all cuts, and most of them feature vocals, Barr himself doesn't sing, the vocal chores being shared by five of the musicians he used. It's an accomplished, straight-ahead bluegrass album, strongly weighted toward traditional songs. The presence of several different combinations of musicians yields more variety ...
