The screamo outfit's sophomore album received a makeover in 2006 after Flicker Records found its way under the Sony BMG umbrella. The boys from Indiana added two new tracks and a bonus DVD, re-releasing the collection as Apparitions of Melody: The Dead Letters Edition. The album's nuances remained the same -- a base of modern rock, indie, and emo coated with David Paul Pelsue's raging vocals. The collection aims for eloquence and metaphor on tracks like "Last Day of 1888," which attempts to evoke a message of tolerance through the eyes of a man accused of depraved crimes. "Burt Rutan" endeavors to tie the plight of the song's namesake -- the aerospace engineer renowned for building private aircraft -- to a degenerating world. Unfortunately, these ties are just as far-fetched as they sound. And the band's cover of Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels," though noteworthy, crushes the yearning emotion of the original hit. Kids in the Way seemed to seek their identity by flexing their guitar muscle, but separating themselves from the pack of indie rockers would take more than just an extra layer of fuzzy power chords and speed rhythms. ~ Jared Johnson

This is one of Buffalo Bop's better triumphs: 30 songs of late 1950s and early 1960s teenage life, most seemingly out of the South and West and by performers who were, on the whole, ready to record, and (based on the evidence here) truly poised for stardom -- Jacky Lee Cochran may even have made it onto television, to judge from two still included. In contrast to many other Buffalo Bop releases, there aren't many overt imitators here -- mostly it's just guys trying for a sound of their own. "Happy Jack" by Sammy Spencer is typical: a piece of hillbilly rock & roll that was probably a little too backwoods to get much of a hearing outside of his immediate environment. Tommy "Jim" Beam's unissued "Bay Rum Rock" is one of the most raucous numbers here and probably would've made enough of a noise to get some radio play if it had made it out the door. "Till I Waltz with You Again" and "But in a Million Years" by Bill Reeder (who had surprisingly long hair, to judge from the photo included) and George Ritchie, respectively, show off the relatively lyrical and not too derivative sounds here, tuneful hard rock & roll with a country flavor -- indeed, Reeder isn't too far from Buddy Holly's sound. In Sepia is a melodic hard rock band that began in a backyard in the city of Compton California. The multi-cultural trio consists of Jamaican-American drummer, Stephen, a Filipino-American guitarist, Andrew and a Salvadoran-American vocalist, Xiomara. Their distinct cultural backgrounds, shared arts advocacy and assorted musical taste create a unique and refreshing sound that is unlike no other.
