Stockholm-based label Sonet Records issued a fine series of blues albums in the early 2000s called the SONET BLUES STORY. These were mostly reissues of recordings made in the 1960s and '70s when interest in classic bluesmen was undergoing a major revival around the world. Lightnin' Hopkins was one such bluesman, a Texas legend whose deft, fluid guitar work was matched only by his skill with a soulful melody or witty narrative. The 12 tracks on Sonet's Hopkins anthology have him backed by bass, drums, and harmonica, and find the man in fine form, bolstering his status as one of the greatest country blues artists of all time.
Personnel: Lightnin' Hopkins (vocals, guitar); Ira James (harmonica); Rusty Myers, Ozell Roberts (bass instrument); Larry McCall (drums).

How often does a writer get to mention bands as diverse as King Diamond, Judas Priest, Queensr˙che, Rush, Iron Maiden, Page & Plant, Rob Zombie, Powerman 5000, and Alice Cooper in one sentence? Well, thank Crimson Glory (Wade Black, Jon Drenning, Ben Jackson, Jeff Lords, and Steve Wacholz) for that. They show influential nods to all of those groups in the music on this album. Of course, they have given listeners much more than that with Astronomica; they have given the world an album which both entertains and pushes the envelope of progressive metal. This one probably is not for everyone. The vocals (which somewhat call to mind King Diamond's style) will most likely send a few people running. Still, those who enjoy prog metal and have a good sense of adventure are in for a thrill ride here. It gets quite intriguing at times. For a quick example of this, jump directly to the title track. Its texture seems to combine the sounds of Page & Plant with a healthy does of both The X Files (yes, the television show) and Queensr˙che. Other ...

| | Martha & the Vandellas Dance Party CD (1965)
Sonet Blues Story CD music
$19.25 One of the great party albums of the 1960s, DANCE PARTY was, oddly enough, the work of a Motown act that wasn't known for delivering great albums. Martha & the Vandellas had enjoyed some serious hits from 1964 onward, but hadn't quite measured up in the LP department until the release of DANCE PARTY in the spring of 1965. Made up of material from singles that went back to the previous summer, the album benefited from the presence of the group's biggest single, "Dancing in the Street," its follow-up, the hypnotically pounding, driving, soaring "Wild One," and the classic "Nowhere to Run," surrounded by a trio of well-above-average B-sides and covers of such Motown dance standards as "Mickey's Monkey" and "Hitch Hike." The rest was hardly filler, however, with Martha Reeves turning in a gloriously impassioned performance on the ballad "There He Is (At My Door)" and the group acquitting itself beautifully on "Motoring." Each side was always good for at least two plays at any self-respecting teen party of the '60s, and it all still holds up today.
