| | Daniel Johnston Yip! Jump Music CD Daniel Johnston Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Personnel: Daniel Johnston (vocals). As for his early music, Yip/Jump Music may be the best place to begin immersing yourself in the world of Daniel Johnston. Extremely primitively recorded with little instrumentation other than keyboards, Johnston's upbeat mood makes this a funny, sometimes moving exercise in obsessive behavior. Two things he thinks about a lot, the Beatles and Casper the Friendly Ghost, are the subject of songs, along with his usual examinations of unattainable love. Not the easiest record in the Johnston canon, but a rewarding one nonetheless. ~ John Dougan This 20-song set collects songs originally self-released as cassettes on Johnston's own Stress label. Johnston's songs are honest and direct, delivered in a style that is all his own. He finds inspiration in both his love of music and his lifelong struggles with mental illness. Johnston's songs have been covered by a number of other artists, including Yo La Tengo and Kathy McCarty (the latter devoted an entire album to his material, DEAD DOG'S EYEBALL). YIP/JUMP MUSIC is primitively recorded, as Johnston provides musical accompaniment with cheap keyboards. However, his sense of pop dynamics, hooks, and song structure help bring about song after memorable song. Tracks like "Sorry Entertainer," "Speeding Motorcycle," and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Your Grievances" are full of hope, optimism, and unquenchable love.Record Collector (magazine) (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he real reason Johnston shines is the fact that he also writes fantastic songs..." Yip! Jump Music
$23.75 Kaleidoscope World is the Chills' essential document, a collection of tracks from early and mid-'80s EPs, singles, and compilation cuts. The influence of Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd is stronger on these early tracks than it would be on subsequent releases, both on the easygoing sing along numbers and the more experimental outings. The highlight (of both the album and the Chills' career) is their New ...

Yip! Jump Music
$22.35 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds ...

The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren't entirely successful. More to the point, though, this was their weakest set of material, low lights including filler like "Do It" and "Runnin' Blue," a strange bluegrass-soul blend that was a small hit. On the other hand, about half the record is quite good, especially the huge hit "Touch Me" (their most successful integration of orchestration), the vicious hard rock riffs of "Wild Child," the overlooked "Shaman's Blues," and the lengthy title track, a multi-part suite that was one of the band's best attempts to mix rock with poetry. "Tell All the People" and "Wishful Sinful," both penned by Robbie Krieger, were uncharacteristically wistful tunes that became small hits but were not all that ...
