Thanks to a pair of brilliantly executed albums in 1999's Pale Folklore and 2002's The Mantle (plus 2001's none too shabby Of Stone, Wind and Pillor EP), Portland, Oregon's Agalloch became, quite possibly, the greatest American black metal band ever, or at the very least, the first American black metal band that really mattered! Such claims should not to be thrown about lightly, its true; but why measure words when faced with the worshipful fervor with which extreme metal fans embraced the enigmatic quartet's inspired creations, featuring corrosive black metal spliced with delicate folk music into arrangements improbably fluid, majestic, and avant-garde? Oh, and the torturously long waits in between their releases didn't hurt matters either, only fueling the notoriously withdrawn band's budding cult legend, while their supporters dug in their heels for what wound up becoming an anxious, four-year vigil leading up to the arrival of Agalloch's third magnum opus, 2006's Ashes Against the Grain. Interestingly, as was the case with each previous effort, this offering displays marked evolution beyond its direct predecessor, so that, where The Mantle had incorporated ever-increasing doses of gothic and doom metal into Pale Folklore's original black metal-folk template, Ashes Against the Grain contains even fewer lingering vestiges (no more female vocals, for instance) of those acoustic guitar-dominated, Scandinavian backwoods elements. Rather, ever-shifting yet still cohesive ten-minute monoliths like "Limbs," "Fire Above, Ice Below," and "Not Unlike the Waves," generally make mere interludes out of their stark, echoing acoustic piano and guitar passages (though strikingly imaginative ones, at that); while vocalist John Haughm makes almost as frequent use of mellow, melodious tones as he does his signature black metal-style rasp. Actually, the latter vocal attack's continued prominence is especially pertinent in the event that a song like "Falling Snow" -- almost entirely definable as driving, gothic death metal -- should provoke any pointless semantic discussions regarding Agalloch's ultimate allegiance to black or death metal -- those often bickering, but inextricably cross-pollinating pillars of musical extremity. Not only for the obviously unnecessary nature of such Byzantine nitpicking, but because Agalloch's unique talents for evoking a constant sense of mysterious, atmospheric, ambiance supersedes most simplistic musical pigeonholing as black, death, or any kind of metal. A visible thread linking their entire body of work so far, this sense of mystery is epitomized by Ashes Against the Grain's three-part closing suite, which culminates in the cathartic climax of "Bloodbirds," and sets the stage for yet another stretch of painful expectation for that next, as yet unwritten chapter in their fascinating evolution. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Ashes Against The Grain Music Agalloch Ashes Against The Grain Songs Ashes Against The Grain Music Review Purchase Ashes Against The Grain CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Agalloch Pale Folklore CD (1999)

Ashes Against The Grain
$12.15 Personnel: Paul Kuhr (vocals); Larry Roberts (guitar); Joel Nunez (drums, percussion); Chris Wisco (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Dan Swanö. Recording information: Studio One. Illustrator: Paul Kuhr. In 2005, Novembers Doom made a giant aesthetic leap forward with The Pale Haunt Departure. It put their death metal roots even closer to subtle, multi-dimensional textures in a collection of songs that were not only memorable, but took the band to new levels in orchestrating vocalist Paul Kuhr's somber, often emotionally desperate lyrics. ...

AC/DC: Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). Recorded at The Warehouse Studio, Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada. Includes bonus disc featuring live performances and 3 videos. Proof positive that geezers can rock, this two-hour video of a single gig recorded in June 2001 at the Olympia Stadium in Munich captures the veteran (and aging -- most of the bandmembers were in their mid- to late forties at the time) Australian rockers in fine fettle. Expertly produced and shot, the band runs through its rousing hits with manic intensity, making most other arena rockers look anemic in comparison. The lead tag-team duo of singer Brian Johnson and guitarist Angus Young never stop crisscrossing the enormous stage, using a long ramp through the middle of the arena and various elevators to bring the music closer to the audience. A mammoth, nearly comic statue of Young remains center stage throughout the performance, blowing smoke and shooting flames during dramatic moments in the set. Agreeably raucous and good-natured fun, this riff-driven blues-rawk is absolutely riveting live. Sure, all the songs sound about the same and the band isn't exactly breaking new ground, but for a practically 30-year-old collective, AC/DC pounds out its patented hard rock with boozy precision most bands half its age can't muster. A 15-minute version of "Let There Be Rock" and an extended "Bad Boy Boogie" where Young does a crowd-pleasing striptease are just two of the show-stopping moments. Perfect for fans and even those who haven't appreciated AC/DC's brash aesthetic on the band's numerous albums, this caught-in-the-act concert connects just as well on video as it did with about 20,000 other enthusiasts. The numerous camera cuts (few shots last longer than five seconds) make watching this a bit tiring on the eyes, but it is a perfect representation of a typical show. Ten minutes of interviews with the band, full 5.1 surround audio, and subtitles in various languages are added enhancements to the DVD. Sweaty, intense, loud, and unrelentingly energetic, it truly is the next best thing to being there. ~ Hal Horowitz Stiff Upper Lip, AC/DC's 15th studio album, may not reach the heights of Back in Black or Highway to Hell, but it delivers strongly and satisfyingly. It's the record that the highly touted, Rick Rubin-produced Ballbreaker should have been: a simple, addictive, hard album, bursting with bold riffs and bolstered by a crunching, thrillingly visceral sound. Sure, there are absolutely no new ideas, but that's the point. AC/DC know their strengths and they embrace them. And why shouldn't they? Nobody ...
