Supersonic album
$8.15 This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a
A key element of the late-1970s/early-'80s UK ska revival, the English Beat nevertheless always had more pop smarts and a wider stylistic palette than compatriots like the Specials and the Selecter. As BEAT THIS! THE BEST OF THE ENGLISH BEAT makes clear, ska wound up being just one color in the band's musical paint box.
Early on, the Beat showed a knack for re-imagining '60s pop tunes in patented two-tone style (Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown," ...
| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire: Deluxe Edition CDs (1973) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Supersonic CD music
$19.59 It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full production and electric guitar solos, CATCH A FIRE sounds more organic and rootsy than any of the Wailers' subsequent releases.
While the percolating rhythms and burbling bass lines of the Barrett brothers, and the sweet, impeccable harmonies of Peter ...

Supersonic songs
$12.09 Recorded between 1969 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Mike Ragogna & Dana Smart.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (1999, MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
Not a career-spanning overview, as opening number "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" dates from 1969, seven years into Jimmy Cliff's career, but this is an excellent trawl through his past nonetheless. Ultimate Collection should really have kicked off with "Waterfall," his first international hit (number one in Brazil), but "World" brought him success in the both in the U.K. and U.S., and apparently that's all that counts. Nevertheless, the set follows the reggae star down the years, through hit singles and across crucial album ...
| | Peter Tosh Mama Africa CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Supersonic album
$8.85 Released nearly five years before his violent death at the hands of thieves in 1987, MAMA AFRICA was the last studio album of new material released in Peter Tosh's lifetime. From his days as one of the original Wailers in the '60s, Tosh was one of Jamaican music's most outspoken and controversial artists. Though his former partner Bob Marley never shied away from political or social statements himself, Tosh eschewed Marley's gift for metaphor and parable in favor of such explicitly political slogans as the legendary "Legalize It."
MAMA AFRICA features the similarly plainspoken anti-nuclear "Peace Treaty," complete with falling-bombs sound effects. The single, a reggae remake of "Johnny B. Goode," was a radio success. While it might seem on the surface to be a crass commercial move to remake a rock classic, Tosh's sly, dread-filled delivery makes plain the racial and social subtext of Chuck Berry's ...

Supersonic album
$18.25 BOARD BOOGIE contains rare Festival label singles by 60's Australian instrumental rock bands.
Australia had a very active instrumental surf music scene in the early to mid-'60s, though with the marginal exception of the Atlantics, none of that music has gotten even small international attention. This 30-song compilation of 1962-1965 instrumental surf cuts (with one track sneaking in from 1967) is wholly drawn from the vaults of Australia's biggest independent label of the time, Festival Records. Perhaps because of that limitation, this might not be the ideal overview of the Australian surf genre; the Atlantics, for instance, are not represented. But on the whole it's a good job as the first internationally available Australian surf compilation reissue, though like many instrumental-only comps, those not enamored of the genre itself might find it too much of a good thing for more than an hour at a time. The differences between Australian instrumental surf rock and the California/American variety aren't easy ...

| | Chapman Jones Other Side Of My Heart CD (2008)
Supersonic CD music
$7.99 Other Side of My Heart is the first CD release for Chapman Jones. Chapman brings simple acoustic tones to your ears with songs like Echoes where Chapman reflects on the heartbeat of a small prairie town whose only excitement is the rumbling train passing through and the title track, Other Side Of My Heart, where a broken heart laments and seeks escape. Both are simple and elegant melodies. Chapman breaks from the acoustic side to a more raucous rock and roller on the tune Where The Rubber Meets The Road, full of driving electric guitar. But the hidden treasures are Lovely Tree, a dedication to his love of trees and There They Go, a humble acoustic tune of children leaving the nest. Then go grab your travel sack and hop aboard as Chapman gives a tip-o-the-hat to the Traveling Wilbury's in his song Going On A Holiday, a fun and fast paced melody with harmonies you'll truly enjoy.Chapman grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio ...
