| | World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's A Real Thing: The Funky, Fuzzy Sounds Of West Africa CD (2005)
Golden Best CD music
$10.55 Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity. The results are raucous, exuberant melting pots of funky soul, psychedelic rock, and honey-sweet Latin horns mixed through the sensibilities of extremely talented African bands on the cusp of developing styles like soukous, mbalax, and Afro-beat. Senegal's Star Band Number One (aka Etoile de Dakar and confusingly billed here as No. 1 de No. 1), were already seasoned veterans by the dawn of the 1970s, and the sound of their "Guajira Van" with its sinewy fuzz guitar solo and talking drum stabs is glorious proto-mbalax. Elsewhere, ...
| | Gipsy Kings Somos Gitanos CD (2001)
Golden Best music CDs
$14.89 It seems that you just can't escape the Gipsy Kings. If you've were in a Mexican-themed restaurant, Latin dance club, or vacation resort in the '90s, you've likely heard the Gipsy Kings' brand of pop flamenco ad nauseam. Their music has become so ubiquitous that it's easy to forget the fact that they are very talented musicians. Somos Gitanos ("We Are Gypsies") is not their best or most accessible effort, but it is a showcase for the Gipsy Kings' formidable talents. The brothers Reyes and Baliardo provide the kind of traditional flamenco, on tracks like "Mi Flameco" and "Felices Dias," that fans expect while also throwing in a few decidedly non-traditional touches. "Majiwi" mixes in Middle-Eastern elements, and is the most danceable track on the album. Similarly, "Magia del Ritmo" provides a bedrock of Brazilian rhythm for their trademark guitar sound. Casual fans may find these departures off-putting, but for everyone else this album ...

| | Fela Kuti Open & Close/Afrodisiac CD (2001)
Golden Best CD music
$14.55 Includes liner notes by Jacqueline Grandchamp-Thiam, Rikki Stein and Mabinuori Kayode Idowu.
Digitally remastered by Pompon (Translab Paris, Paris, France).
This CD reissue combines two early-'70s albums -- Open & Close and Afrodisiac -- on a single disc. Open & Close has just three songs, all in the ten- to 15-minute range, mixing some of the improvisational verve of jazz into Kuti's Afro-funk stew. There's a bittersweet, faintly melancholy tone to some of the progressions that differentiates this from much African pop of then and later, and the half-dozen percussionists set a good bed on which the horns and electric keyboards swap lines. "Gbagada Gbagada Gbogodo Gbogodo" is highlighted by extensive call-and-response vocals between Kuti and the band. The four (as usual, lengthy) songs occupying Aphrodisiac had been originally recorded in Nigeria as 45 rpm releases, though that album consists of re-recordings of these done in London in the early '70s. (Confusingly, one part of the liner notes gives the years 1972-1973 as the recording dates, while another section says they were cut in 1971.) While it's true that Fela Kuti's records from this period are pretty similar to each other, in their favor they're not boring. These four workouts, all sung in Nigerian, are propulsive mixtures of funk and African music, avoiding ...
| | Willie August Project Surrender To The Wind CD (2004)
Golden Best music CDs
$13.29 The Willie August Project was founded in the late 1990s by guitarist-composer Ben Siems and percussionist Jeremy Hauer. Siems had recently returned to Minnesota after attending Brown University and spending several years on the Atlantic Coast as a solo blues/folk musician. Though fresh out of Music Tech College in Minneapolis, Hauer already had nearly five years of jazz gigging under his belt.Drawing inspiration from the postbop jazz of the 1960s and from the airy, meditative jazz associated with Germany's ECM record ...
