In a world where people often value speed of delivery over quality of product, it’s not surprising that a lot of today’s pop music is built for quick consumption, spat out at the masses and quickly forgotten. For the starved souls that still crave a tastefully crafted album, the options are few and far between.Meet In-Flight Safety. The Halifax-based quartet’s first full-length album The Coast Is Clear exceeds all expectations. The disc is a superb cinematic pop experiment that tugs at your heartstrings upon first listen.Starting out in Vancouver, the band began work on five tracks with producer Warne Livesey (Midnight Oil, 54-40), who took the band under his British wing for a month-long recording adventure. On their return to Halifax the band enlisted Laurence Currie (Sloan, Ghandharvas) to help bring the record towards the finish line. But, when it came time to sculpt the album into a satisfying wall of sound, In-Flight Safety opted for the hands on approach.Surprisingly, about half of The Coast Is Clear was recorded in a small home studio. “We put great care into each and every note on this album,” says vocalist/guitarist John Mullane, “This lends the music a warmth and intimacy that you can’t achieve while on the clock at a big budget studio.”“Since time wasn’t a constraint during the recording process, each of us got our own ideas into every song but, knowing when to let go became the bane of our existence. It’s a breath of fresh air to finally be able to share it with the world.”The hard work is apparent from the first note. Drummer Glen Nicholson’s forceful, steady pulse builds a sturdy foundation. Bassist Brad Goodsell supports the low end with thoughtful minimalism. Daniel Ledwell’s explorative piano passages tickle the ear, while John Mullane tops the proceedings with honey-like guitars and his richly textured voice. Add some sonic surprises to the mix â€" glockenspiels, grand pianos, fifteen-piece choirs, and sounds that they don’t even know the name of â€" and you have a disc that builds on the In-Flight Safety’s signature sound. The group’s first release, the 2003 mellow-pop gem Vacation Land, won over countless fans and critics upon release, landing the band two Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia Award nominations (Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album). ...
