| | Drumline CD (2002) Original Soundtrack
Deadicated
$7.59 While the film DRUMLINE is based around a group of youngsters who play in a marching band at a Southern college, there's not much drum-corps music on the soundtrack. In keeping with the pop-cultural milieu of the film, most of this disc is occupied by contemporary hip-hop and R&B tracks. On the one hand, there are frothy soul concoctions from young sirens such as Nivea, Alicia Keys, and Syleena Johnson. On the other, there are hard-hitting rap cuts by Petey Pablo, JC Chasez, Too Short, and others. Other than a brief percussive foray at the top of the track listing, the actual marching-band music is saved for two cuts at the end, whose swinging polyrhythms dip heavily into funk and hip-hop, serving to remind that modern-day drum majors are anything but square.
Original score composed by John Powell.

| | Lil Wayne Tha Carter III - Explicit Version CD (2005) Explicit
Deadicated
$10.75 A one-time member of New Orleans's Hot Boys, rapper Lil Wayne attained a new level of confidence and skill on 2004's THA CARTER. That album featured only a few guest shots (as opposed to typically star-studded hip-hop records), and this 2005 sequel once again keeps things focused on Wayne, with the MC flying solo on almost every track. This uncluttered scenario, which relies on a spare, yet distinctly Cash Money-style musical backdrop, gives Wayne the freedom to let his laid-back rhymes stretch out, as best revealed on the ominous "Fireman" and the boastful "Best Rapper Alive." Clearly Wayne knows how to work a winning concept, since THA CARTER II stays true to both its predecessor and the relentless, unapologetic spirit of Southern rap.
Although his first studio album in three years has been long-awaited and repeatedly delayed, Lil Wayne has been anything but absent. Since THA CARTER II, Weezy has left an impressive mass of recordings--from mixtapes (authorized and otherwise) to guest appearances--in his wake as he blusters through the rap industry. In the third installment of the THA CARTER series, Wayne shows he's earned the right to ego-trip as he lets his off-kilter flow, freak-out lyrics, and vocal acrobatics run wild over 16 tracks. Scaling the heights of hubris on "Dr. Carter," he plays ...
| | War All Day Music CD (1971)
Deadicated
$9.75 The album that paved the way for War's commercial success, 1971's ALL DAY MUSIC is a laid-back slice of genuine California funk. Modeled on the aesthetic of musically and racially integrated bands Santana and Sly & the Family Stone, War knocked down many boundaries separating genres. Soul, rock, Latin, blues, and funk all make their way into the mix here, and while the group's later records would groove harder, there is a sunny mellowness to this album that evokes the palm trees and balmy breezes of the ensemble's native Los Angeles.
Because War ...

| | Buttery Lords Buttered For Her Pleasure CD (2006)
Deadicated
$15.19 *****“The Buttery Lords are like a wonderful audio time capsule from my favorite era of hiphop—oh, the early/mid '90s, when most of the listening world still was unsure whether the Beastie Boys were talented or just goofballs, and when jingly Digable Planets songs were updating jazz music with a one-two combination of lounge beats and street smarts. It was a glorious time! ...the Buttery Lords return hiphop to what I always hoped it would be: macho and aggrandizing, yet still fun, jazzy, cheeky, and self-effacing. There are several reasons why the Buttery Lords have become one of the city's longest-standing hiphop groups: They have musical talents and confidence (and a hefty library of pop-culture references—really, when's the last time Fabio, Bob Seger, and the WTO protests have been referenced together in a rap song?), but also the good sense not to take themselves too seriously. Even their most vulgar lyrics make you want to throw your arms around these young men.” - The Portland Mercury*****Portland's idiosyncratic rap heroes the Buttery Lords proudly announce the Collector's Edition reissue of their underground hit Buttered For Her Pleasure. This album is a unique hip-hop experience featuring live bass and drums that showcase the imaginative lyrics of gifted MCs Dr Marble, Hub, and Baby Powder Fresh. In addition to the ten original tracks and a dub remix, the Collector's Edition of Buttered For Her Pleasure features an industry first: commentary tracks! These six tracks are just like a DVD commentary, but without the stupid pictures, as the MCs offer insight and colorful anecdotes about the writing and production of the songs. And oh, those songs... those wonderful, wonderful songs!“Make U Sad” is a dark, densely orchestrated tale of woe, featuring cello, upright bass, sitar, and lyrics that would make Jesus punch a puppy right in the face. Spelling lessons and sexual innuendo blend seamlessly in “Let’s Get Buttery,” a steamy favorite of the group’s frenetic live shows. The anthemic dance track “Oh So Creamy” provokes outlandish gyration, while “Vitamin R” is a horn-driven ode to the now-defunct Rainier pounder. And yes, that is Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler”, although you might not recognize it anymore.Mixed by indie rock icon Larry Crane at Jackpot! Recording Studio, Buttered For Her Pleasure may be one of the few hip-hop albums ever produced without a single drum machine, loop, or even a click track. The elastic, jazz-influenced bass lines of PBR-1 are balanced with powerful, buttrock-derived drumwork by Voltron's Booty ...
