Joe Grushecky writes like a regular guy for a good reason -- he is one. While Grushecky has had a long career in rock & roll, including a brief flirtation with the major labels as frontman for the Iron City Houserockers, these days he earns his living as a schoolteacher and makes music on the side, which is doubtless why when he writes about the lives of working stiffs and ordinary Joes, the songs bear the ring of truth rather than a sense of condescension. A Good Life is Grushecky's tenth album since the breakup of the Houserockers, and it doesn't break much in the way of new ground, but that isn't a bad thing -- this is solid and heartfelt rust belt rock & roll played and sung by a man who has been doing this stuff and making it stick for quite some time, and he still hasn't lost his passion for what he does. Grushecky also hasn't lost his knack as a songwriter -- in fact, A Good Life is one of his strongest collections of new songs in years. Grushecky's tales of ordinary folks counting life's small blessings are smart and moving ("A Good Life," "Party Tonight"), he knows plenty about the uphill climb of life ("Code of Silence," "Searching for My Soul"), and his tale of a busted marriage ("The Other Shoe") sounds as honest as his story of a family that somehow held together ("Father and Son"). And while no one would ever peg Grushecky as a proud son of Louisiana, "Lake Pontchartrain" is a cry of pain and rage in the wake of Hurricane Katrina that sounds like he witnessed the tragedy up close and personal. Grushecky's work is good enough on A Good Life that the presence of friend, fan, and genuine rock star Bruce Springsteen on four songs doesn't steal the show away from him; A Good Life is another chapter in the ongoing story of an underrated rock & roll hero who may never become a household name but who keeps on doing his work as well as he can, and there's a message in that almost as important as any in the songs he writes. ~ Mark Deming

Good Life
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count Basie! Rushing sounds right at home with this group, which included tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, ...

| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Good Life
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record over its successor, however, as a more modest-sized ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra Face The Music CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded Edition
Good Life
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with A NEW WORLD RECORD and DISCOVERY.
Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's revolutionary "Super Bit Mapping" system.
ELO was big enough by 1974 that some people actually suggested that ELDORADO featured Satanic backward-masking. Of course, the idea was ludicrous; but the band playfully responded by adding a backward message to "Fire on High," the opening instrumental on 1975's FACE THE MUSIC.
Besides "Fire on High," which was used as background music for countless television programs in the '70s, this album's eight lengthy tracks include two enormous hits, "Evil Woman" and the McCartneyesque ballad ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra On The Third Day CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded Edition
Good Life
$7.59 In some ways, 1973's ON THE THIRD DAY is the first "true" ELO album. Though co-founder Roy Wood had left the band to form the more experimental Wizzard after the first album, his influence was still all over 1972's ELO II, especially on the orchestrated cover of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven." ON THE THIRD DAY, however, is pure Jeff Lynne, the first album completely devoted to his soon-to-be enormously successful blend of psychedelic-era ...
| | Lucinda Williams West CD (2007) Digipak
Good Life
$11.45 Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears all the hallmarks of her best work: excellent songcraft, poetically tough lyrics, and her angel-on-morphine voice. As an album, it is her most consistent and appealing since 1998's CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.
Williams's seemingly odd choice to work with mainstream pop producer Hal Willner works wonderfully. Willner built the album up ...
