Audiophile: Third Compact Disc Sampler CD music
$12.78 On an inside panel of the booklet for House Full of Floors, Evan Parker's second release for John Zorn's Tzadik imprint (and his third album of 2009), he writes simply of the session as if framing a poem: "The plan was to / record the trio. / Aleks Kolkowski / came to make some / wax cylinder recordings / and he stayed / to play some / quartet pieces." The truth of the matter is, this is hardly disingenuous. The recording actually sounds exactly like its description. Parker, guitarist John ...
| | Lee Ritenour Wes Bound CD (1992)
Audiophile: Third Compact Disc Sampler music CDs
$10.69 Lee Ritenour, a superior studio guitarist, has recorded very few jazz albums throughout his career, preferring to play melodic pop and light funk. On the rare occasions when he has had an urge to perform jazz, Ritenour has been more than happy to show off the influence of Wes Montgomery; therefore, this tribute is a logical move, even if the results are not all that exciting. Ritenour mostly plays pieces from the later (and more commercial) half of Montgomery's career, along with four of his own originals that are sort of in the tradition. He also hedges his bet a little by throwing in a Bob Marley reggae tune. For jazz listeners who wish to sample some Lee Ritenour, this is one of his better recordings, but why purchase Wes Bound when there are so many more significant Wes Montgomery albums currently in print? ~ Scott Yanow

| | Rippingtons Live In L.A. CD (1992)
Audiophile: Third Compact Disc Sampler songs
$11.29 Recorded live at The Ventura Theatre, Ventura, California on September 25, 1992 and at The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, California on September 26, 1992.
Any truehearted devotee of the Rippingtons Featuring Russ Freeman knows the two secrets of their unparalleled success in the contemporary jazz world over the course of numerous releases since 1986. First and foremost, it's those lush, ultra-melodic Freeman compositions, many of which have become genre classics. Beyond those, the band has attracted fans the world over with one of the most exciting and dynamic live shows in instrumental music. It seems wholly appropriate, then, to take stock of the wealth of Freeman's catalog not with a mere greatest-hits collection, but with the fun-filled CD and video package, Live in L.A. Recorded September 25 and 26, 1992, at the Ventura Theatre in Ventura and Los Angeles' ...

If music for the dancefloor is intended for dancing, Mr. Scruff has disappointed. On this debut full-length from one of the premier British trip-hop remixers, one can't help but feel as though they maybe drank too much before heading out to the club. But if the listener is seated at home with a few friends after ...
