Here album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night.

| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
Here CD music
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From there, Z-Ro, an expert storyteller, wanders from tale to tale, each one delivered with a novelist's touch, on a record which somehow transcends cookie-cutter.
In 2009, Z-Ro's loyal fan base expected Heroin, a two-CD set announced the previous year, but instead they got Cocaine, a one-CD version with many songs that already appeared on the mixtape Codeine. Confusing, and rumors of the rapper's difficulties with the Rap-A-Lot label top it all off, but the good news is that Cocaine is no great disappointment. It does feel ...

| | Eddy Orini Divine Mustache: A Musical Tribute To The Genius Of Salvador Dali CD (2004)
Here music CDs
$13.25 This 2004 release isn't the first time that jazz or jazz-friendly musicians have acknowledged a well-known painter; over the years, jazz compositions have been inspired by Pablo Picasso, Michelangelo, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh, among others. In fact, avant-garde improvisers seem to be especially fond of van Gogh, whose abstract, eccentric paintings could arguably be described as a visual equivalent of Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman or Anthony Braxton -- like those musicians, van Gogh gave us works of art that are brilliant but not for everyone. And on this CD, composer/singer Eddy Orini's visual inspiration is Spanish painter Salvador Dali (b. May 11, 1904, Spain, d. Jan. 23, 1989). Despite the fact that Divine Mustache: A Musical Tribute to the Genius of Salvador Dali was recorded for a Swiss jazz label (TCB Music) and employs European jazz musicians, Orini's salute to Dali isn't really jazz -- jazz-influenced, yes, but not really jazz (even if one has a truly broad definition of the word and believes that jazz is everything from King Oliver's Dixieland to Weather Report's fusion). Actually, the category that Divine Mustache pretty much falls into is progressive rock; stylistically, this release brings to mind bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Pink Floyd and Genesis, and Orini shares their appreciation of European classical music. Orini's eccentric and quirky yet musical offerings can be self-indulgent, but not overwhelmingly so -- and more often than not, his risk-taking pays off. Although ...

| | Allman Brothers Band 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection: The Best Of - Live CD (2007)
Here songs
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Music Studios, Edison, New Jersey).
A good if not ideal one-disc best-of by the venerable American institution, this set has all the hits (including Greg's solo "Midnight Rider") and studio versions of most of the concert favorites (translation: don't expect the usually epic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"). Interestingly, for a band that first made its mark as a contemporary blues band, not much of the material here is blues per se ("Whipping Post" being the obvious exception), so if you're considering buying this you might want to check out the previously available DECADE OF HITS: 1969-1979, another one-disc best-of that gives a more well-rounded view of the band's music.
Includes liner ...
| | Seven Doors Hotel CD (2007) (Import)
Here album
$10.29 I landed in Norway and there on the front page of the newspaper is Willie Nelson with his arms around a Norwegian musician. Willie was making friends in Norway. A good thing to keep in mind is a bit of respect for one's elders. If Willie was doing it, I needed to make some friends in Norway. And thus began my relationship with Seven Doors Hotel. The band rocks, the band sways, the band grooves. How is it that you end up in a place so far from home and find music that touches you in a back home way? I made friends with Alex, the singer. We met at the statue park and discussed the upcoming schedules in each others lives. Finding that we each had some downtime, we got together and I recorded a few songs at his home studio. He handed me this ...
