Their Debut CD, 'No Rest : No Mercy', produced by Paul Hodson (Hard Rain, Bob Catley), was released by Edge Records in 1993 and hailed Stairway's International popularity. The album was released in Japan later that same year, and debuted at #48 in the Japanese Import Charts. After completing contractual obligations with their former label, Stairway independently released their 2nd CD, 'Bleeding Heart' in July 1999. During 2002 Stairway's 3rd album 'On Hallowed Ground ' was released to great reviews and media feedback, as well as incredible support from fans worldwide. In 2003 the track 'Under the Gun', taken from the 'On Hallowed Ground' album, was chosen to feature on a CD of Metal Bands released by American Label MIB Music. Further to calls for their debut album, Stairway signed a deal with Retroactive Records in the USA to re-release the 'No Rest : No Mercy' album as a Limited Edition. Concerts to follow this up took place in 2005, followed by an incredible final gig appearance in October '05 at Metalfest Germany Co-headlining with Rob Rock (USA) and Narnia (Sweden). In 2005/06 the band began recording their new CD - a disc of pure Power Rock. Gripping vocals, shredding lead guitar and a strangely optimistic melancholic angst are the meat & potatoes of Stairway's 4th album outing 'The Other Side Of Midnight'. A full on, power metal rock album capable of leaving even the most hardened metal fan shaking and wanting more. The Other Side Of Midnight is as pure and emotional as it gets. With thick layers of true metal guitars, searing vocals, pumping bass and thunder kicking drums. Performances by Doc Watson with Frosty Morn have become a high point at Merlefest, the annual gathering launched in memory of Doc's son and collaborator, Merle Watson. The band, formed by Merle shortly before his death in 1985, plays impeccably on this Merlefest recording, but Doc opens alone with two traditional performances, playing banjo behind his own vocals on "Lynchburg Town" and singing a cappella on the haunting ballad "Coo Coo Bird." The stigma of Helloween is a hard one to get rid off, as illustrated on Gamma Ray's first three LPs. Kai Hansen succeeded in creating a band of his own, but he couldn't come up with an idiosyncratic style or even implement it well. Land of the Free is, however, a complete success considering Hansen's progression. Land of the Free intriguingly breaks the basic concept that Gamma Ray's contemporaries have used so much. The opener, "Rebellion in Dreamland," for example, doesn't have a decent structure. The seven-minute piece is constructed in many different parts, instead of the verse-chorus-verse pattern that is so typical of other metal bands. Also, most importantly, their large sound is achieved by using synths and sound effects, so Land of the Free offers a lot more than just distorted guitars and high-pitched singing.
