Jim Tomlinson originally intended to make this outing an instrumental CD, but when he had the opportunity to work with his wife, vocalist Stacey Kent, he quickly adapted most of the session to include her. The English tenor saxophonist chose time-tested material from standards and a few bossa novas, playing all of them with a lyrical sound reminiscent of the late giant Stan Getz, particularly in "'Manha de Carnaval" and"Corcovado." Kent's sweet voice complements her husband's band very well, catching the playfulness of "If I Were a Bell" and savoring the thoughtful tempo of "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top." Pianist David Newton, one of Europe's most underrated jazz pianists, anchors the rhythm section (with bassist Dave Chamberlain and drummer Matt Skelton), providing perfect backgrounds for the couple, with his lush playing in "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" especially standing out. On his debut for Kokopelli the masterful altoist went overtly commercial. On this CD, Doug Lawrence argues convincingly for the viability of the classic sax/organ/guitar quartet, playing his tenor sax with a smooth, hip swagger while honoring his colleagues by giving them plenty of room to navigate the seven pieces in the program. Even though Lawrence is not yet an old-timer (46 as this is written), he is more than a revivalist; he has been immersed in this music for more than 20 years, and he handles it with respect but no undue reverence. And while his roots may be substantially in big band swing (he leads a popular dance band orchestra in Chicago), he is clearly very much at home with hard bop and soul-jazz. While she might not be a household name yet, anyone who has listened to Lenny Kravitz, the Afghan Whigs or Lynyrd Skynyrd has heard Marshall's impressive singing chops, a gift that never fails to stop people in their tracks. "Where this woman has been hiding, I don't know," ran a comment on Rockphiles , while Rolling Stone made special mention of Marshall's performance at a Gram Parsons tribute that featured Norah Jones, Lucinda Williams and Keith Richards: "The spine-chill award went to Memphis soul singer Susan Marshall, who belted a powerful 'Do Right Woman' that practically brought people to their knees."
