The Austin band Nervous Exits is a modern-age anomaly--a punk band that's unafraid to twist the conventions of the genre to its own noisy, creative ends. On its debut album, the opening "It's a Flash" directs its Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer" feel with a purposeful energy, the bluesy boogie of "Annabel" has elements both of the Doors and of the 1970s British R&B band Dr. Feelgood, and the interweaving time signatures of "!5 Down" create a tense, nerve-jangling atmosphere.
Nervous Exits: John Yaklin (vocals); Armando Sandoval, Patrick Travis (guitar); Adam Amparan (bass guitar); Nick Yaklin (drums).

| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Get Out CD music
$16.24 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. And even as she's becoming omnipresent, with her ...

| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Get Out songs
$8.75 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional ...

$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album ...

| | Outrageous Cherry Why Don't We Talk About Something Else CD (2004)
Get Out album
$7.99 The five-song EP Why Don't We Talk About Something Else is quintessential Outrageous Cherry, witty and jangly on the outside and bittersweet on the inside. As a taster for their next album Our Love Will Change the World, "Why Don't We Talk About Something Else" itself opts for tight hooks and clever lyrics ("Why don't we talk about something else/Not your shock-treatment childhood or your split personality"), emphasizing the fresh take on pop classicism that's kept the band sounding vital for over a decade. The rest of the EP is also more straightforward than the psych-prog leanings of their recent output. "Eternity Changed Her Mind" is a sweet, Beach Boys-tinged ballad, and "Don't Worry" sets philosophical ...
