| | Tom Rush Blues, Songs And Ballads CD (1963)
Tom Rush - How I Play (Some Of) My Favorite Songs film
$9.65 Consisting mostly of traditional blues covers, this early acoustic effort has a weaker selection of material than the Got a Mind to Ramble LP, which was cut at the same May 1963 sessions. Both Got a Mind to Ramble and the original Blues, Songs and Ballads album have been combined onto one disc for Fantasy's expanded CD reissue of Blues, Songs and Ballads, which is the recommended alternative to the original LP. ~ Richie Unterberger
A 23-song collection combining two albums that Tom Rush recorded in 1963 (Got a Mind to Ramble and Blues, Songs and Ballads) onto a single CD. Rush plays acoustic guitar, accompanied only by Fritz Richmond on washtub bass, for a selection of almost exclusively traditional material; the only track penned ...
| | Very Best Of Tom Rush: No Regrets CD (1999)
Tom Rush - How I Play (Some Of) My Favorite Songs review
$6.95 Recorded between 1962 and 1998. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh and Tom Rush.
Singer/guitarist Tom Rush came out of the fertile early-1960s Cambridge, MA folk scene, and made his mark not as a songwriter but as an interpreter of others' songs. Rush's plainspoken, versatile singing has some of the roughness of Dave Van Ronk and some of the mellowness of Eric Anderson and Tom Russell, and he effectively puts across a variety of songs--traditional acoustic blues, contemporary songs, country--in a convincing assortment of moods.
Rush was among the first to cover songs by Joni Mitchell, Jackson Brown, Lee Clayton and James Taylor before they became well-known. NO REGRETS is the first collection to cover Rush's entire career, from 1962's "San Francisco Bay Blues" to 1998's previously-unreleased "River Song." The highlights here are many, one in particular being a bleak but luminous version of Joni Mitchell's "Urge For Going." This collection is worth seeking out for fans of Rush as well as of contemporary ...
| | Tom Rush Circle Game CD (1968)
Tom Rush - How I Play (Some Of) My Favorite Songs DVD
$9.09 A candid and charming collection of songs that glisten as beautifully as a clear mountain stream. Singer/songwriter/poet Tom Rush had a wonderful idea in mind for a concept album, working with music business greats Arthur Gorson and Paul Harris to blend the best of the time period's songwriters. The effort results in a splendid achievement of emotionally and lyrically gripping material. Taking advantage of his resonant tenor voice and the majestic talents of a stirring crew of musicians, Rush performs wistful and ethereal versions of some of his favorite songs. Material selected includes deeply lyrical tunes such as Joni Mitchell's "Tin Angel" and "Urge for Going," and romantic songs like James Taylor's "Something in the Way She Moves." The album, titled The Circle Game, features Mitchell's radio hit single of the same name. Certainly during the '70s this album was marketed well and fared with great success among the listening public, inviting Rush into an elite group of solo singer/songwriters of the decade. Just to prove to the world that he is no fluke ...
| | Gene Clark No Other CD (1974)
Tom Rush - How I Play (Some Of) My Favorite Songs movie DVD
$11.59 Ex-Byrd Gene Clark's early-'70s solo efforts, which rank alongside the recordings of the Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in terms of quality, vision, and appeal, have been unjustly overlooked. This is particularly true of NO OTHER, Clark's 1974 coup de grace. While the focus of NO OTHER's excellent predecessors WHITE LIGHT and ROADMASTER was on stripped down, passionate country-rock, NO OTHER pushes Clark's aesthetic to another level entirely. A cadre of female backing vocalists lend gospel-drenched color to the album, taking Clark's excellent compositions to church, and giving the whole a sanctified feel.
Amid the strummed acoustics and weeping pedal steel of songs like "Life's Greatest Fool" and "The True One," there is also the expansive, orchestral feel ...
