| | Blue County CD (2004)
Back Up Again
$6.09 Curb Records could easily promote the duo of Aaron Benward and Scott Reeves by referring to their background, but the fingersnapping opening track "Good Little Girls" is so strong that they could take country music by storm even without those cool resumés (the single hit the Top Ten on the Billboard Country Singles Chart before the album's release). A look back: Benward was a successful gospel singer, scoring several contemporary Christian hit albums with his dad as Aaron Jeffrey, while Reeves starred on The Young & The Restless. All that is somewhat secondary for the tandem, who met through a mutual friend at a video shoot five years ago. While they sound ...
| | Trick Pony R.I.D.E. CD (2005)
Back Up Again
$7.29 R.I.D.E., the title of Trick Pony's third album, stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment." Of course, in 2000's Nashville, rebelling could often mean playing straight-up old-school country while not taking oneself too seriously, two pursuits at which Trick Pony excels. A slice of good-time barroom country rock, R.I.D.E. manages to sound staunchly traditional while never sticking too close to a formula. Primary lead vocalist Heidi Newfield comes off like a bawdy mix of Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, and Mae West, delivering the pure honky-tonk of "Ain't Wastin' Good Whiskey On You" and the tears-in-your-beer emotion of "When I Fall" with equal panache. It's guitarist Keith Burns, however, who delivers the record's most accessible song with "Sad City," which features a guest vocal from Hootie & The ...

| | Vince Gill These Days CDs (2006) Digipak
Back Up Again
$19.39 Not since Prince released the three-hour, three-CD set EMANCIPATION in 1996 or the Magnetic Fields took a similar number of discs for the sprawling 69 LOVE SONGS in 1999 has an artist attempted something as expansive as Vince Gill's THESE DAYS. A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the Band and features Bonnie Bramlett's vocals on several songs. Disc two, THE REASON WHY, is a modern pop record in the style of Shania Twain's international releases, with several duet partners ...

Back Up Again
$13.15 My StoryBecoming a Christian Country singer/songwriter was never really a part of my plan. I started playing guitar when I was just a youngster. My musical influences for guitar were Chet Atkins and Merle Travis. In my teen years I started playing professionally. I had the opportunity to tour in the era when Grand Ole Opry Stars would play County Fairs across the nation, and fill grandstands every night. I followed the guitar wherever it would take me and soon found myself in Texas, playing in a western swing band. In Texas my sense of music matured a great deal. I developed a true appreciation for the vocalist. Some of my favorites were Ray Price, Wynn Stewart, Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, and of course you can't play in Texas without Bob Wills and western swing. For the majority of my life I played guitar or steel guitar with scores of groups that were each forgettable it their own way. I remember many nights sitting on the bandstand behind my steel guitar wondering ...
