Soulgrass
$10.55 Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle, Billy May (arranger, conductor). Recorded between 1953 and 1960. Includes liner notes by Bruce Springsteen and Pete Hamill. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Bob Norberg (Capitol Mastering). Audio Remasterer: Bob Norberg. Recording information: 1953-196?. Photographer: Sid Avery. Arranger: Nelson Riddle. A good single-disc compilation of his Capitol years, covering 1953 to the beginning of the 1960s. His Capitol output was so extensive that it's impossible for a 20-song anthology to give a comprehensive overview even of the highlights. Also, as this focuses on the albums he made with Capitol, some of his biggest hits of the time are omitted, such as "Learnin' the Blues," "Hey! Jealous Lover," and "High Hopes." Still, a lot of the performances much of the public identifies with the singer are here, including "I Get a Kick out of You," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "Witchcraft," "All the Way," "Come Fly With Me," "One for My Baby," "Young at Heart," and "I've Got You Under My Skin." ~ Richie Unterberger Sinatra's years on the Capitol label (1953-60) were great years. His voice ...

| | Frank Sinatra In The Wee Small Hours CD (1955) Remastered
Soulgrass
$11.49 Originally issued on CD without the song "Last Night When We Were Young." Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (arranger). Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh (Capitol Recording Studios). Personnel: Frank Sinatra (vocals). Audio Remasterers: Larry Walsh; Bob Norberg. Liner Note Author: Pete Welding. Recording information: 03/01/1954-03/04/1955. Photographer: William Claxton. Arranger: Nelson Riddle. Expanding on the concept of Songs for Young Lovers!, In the Wee Small Hours was a collection of ballads arranged by Nelson Riddle. The first 12" album recorded by Sinatra, Wee Small Hours was more focused and concentrated than his two earlier concept records. It's a blue, melancholy album, built around a spare rhythm section featuring a rhythm guitar, celesta, and Bill Miller's piano, with gently aching strings added every once and a while. Within that melancholy mood is one of Sinatra's most jazz-oriented performances ...

| | Dan Barrett Reunion With Al CD (1995)
Soulgrass
$9.95 Feat. Al Jenkins
Personnel: Dan Barrett (cornet); Al Jenkins (vocals, trombone); Ricky Fay (clarinet, soprano & tenor saxophones); Ray Sherman (piano); David Stone (bass); Jeff Hamilton (drums). Recorded at JEL Studios, Newport Beach, California on March 5 & 6, 1993. Includes liner notes by Floyd Levin. Personnel: Dan Barrett (cornet, trombone); Al Jenkins (vocals, trombone); Rick Fay (clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Ray Sherman (piano); Jeff Hamilton (drums). Recording information: Jel Studios, Newport Beach, CA (03/05/1993-03/06/1993). Trombonist Al Jenkins, who recorded with Doc Evans in the late 1940s and Art Hodes in 1956, spent much of his career playing either in the Midwest or in Los Angeles and never achieved much fame. He was an early influence on Dan Barrett's style, so in 1993, the younger trombonist persuaded Jenkins to join him on his record date. As it turned out, this would be Jenkins' final recording, since he passed away Nov. 15, 1996 at the age of 82. In deference to Jenkins, Barrett sticks to cornet exclusively on this CD (it is a pity they did not both play trombone on a song or two). With pianist Ray Sherman (always a marvelous soloist), bassist ...
| | Nawang Khechog Quiet Mind CD (1991)
Soulgrass
$13.25 Tibetan Flute Master
Solo performer: Nawang Khechog. Originally released as SOUNDS OF INNER PEACE. Audio Remasterer: Steve VanZandt. Author: Nawang Khechog. Photographers: Lin Martin; Nawang Khechog. In turns contemplative and drowsy, this album, subtitled The Musical Journey of a Tibetan Nomad, was previously released as Sounds of Inner Peace. Nawang Khechog here plays multiple wind instruments, most notably the Tibetan bamboo flute (a very large flute -- maybe three feet or so), but also the didgeridoo (he spent some time in Australia), the Incan panpipes, and a silver flute. The music verges on new age at many times (he has been noted for his work with Kitaro), which can be either a plus or a minus, depending on the listener. For something with a thicker tone, perhaps some music for the shakuhachi from the Fuke Zen sect in Japan would be a good choice. Otherwise, this is a nice album of clear tones on pretty good compositions. ~ Adam Greenberg As ...

Soulgrass
$6.49 Personnel: Bill Monroe (mandolin); Jimmy Martin (vocals). The King and the Father features a dozen of Bill Monroe's early-'50s Decca recordings on which Jimmy Martin provided lead or duet vocals. Although these performances were originally billed only to Monroe, the anthology cleverly gives joint credit to Monroe, the "Father of Bluegrass," and Martin, the "King of Bluegrass," to emphasize Martin's contribution and to target his audience. Many bluegrass devotees regard Martin as the finest bluegrass vocalist ...
