On its third full-length album, PHOBIA, the Pennsylvania-based heavy-rock act Breaking Benjamin offers up another potent round of moody, riff-laden tunes. While "The Diary of Jane" revels in sheer ferocity and recalls Bush, the emotive "Breath" carries echoes of early Tool, revealing that the ensemble is intent on staying true to its 1990s alt-metal forebears. Although these influences place the group, led by emotive vocalist Ben Burnley, in the company of Nickelback and Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin distinguishes itself with a sense of earnestness and a knack for melody matched by few of its peers. While fans of the band will undoubtedly embrace PHOBIA, the consistently engaging release may also win Breaking Benjamin a new set of admirers as well.

A best-of that comprises cuts from two studio efforts and a live album? For a lesser artist, the consumer would be well within his rights to cry foul. In Leonard Cohen's case, however, virtually every track he's ever recorded merits anthologizing. MORE BEST OF contains the strongest songs from I'M YOUR MAN and THE FUTURE, two of Cohen's latter-day masterpieces that combine his dark, poetic lyrics with an ironically glossy sonic framework. To add some historical perspective, live versions of early cuts like "Suzanne" are included. The depth (both spiritual and physical) of Cohen's readings here stands in sharp contrast to the original recordings. Detroit has produced more than its share of great music: from jazz stars like Hank, Thad & Elvin Jones; to the Motown stable of vocal artists, and legendary rhythm players Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson. Not to mention a whole lot of hard funk and primal metal, everyone from Funkadelic and Ted Nugent, to Iggy & The Stooges and the MC5--hard driving, rugged rock and roll. Put it all together with a touch of pop, and a lot of soul, and you've got Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band.
It's easy to divine Seger's influence on the music of Bruce Springsteen, and draw parallels with the vocal style of Van Morrison. The epic themes of Seger's characters on "Night Moves" certainly parallel those of the folk heroes who populate Springsteen songs (though he began developing his menagerie a good decade before the Boss). The chant-like, testifying cadences of Seger's blowtorch voice, and his predilection for gospelish motifs, puts one in mind of the mighty Celt's visionary flights.
