| | Supersystem Million Microphones CD Supersystem Discography of CDs
Supersystem seems to have it all: hip-hop beats, glitchy dance-punk rhythms, neo-retro synths, and electronic loops and bleeps, all tied together with great songwriting and some truly unique melodies. A MILLION MICROPHONES finds the band marshalling all of these elements to create pop and rock songs that you can't help but dance to. And while there are plenty of straight-ahead dance numbers, there is musical variety as well. "Earth Body Air" features a liquid synth line slithering over drums and bass while a flute floats in the background, and "Eagles Fleeing Eyries" adds harp arpeggios to a funky bass foundation. This is an album that satisfies all expectations and is still full of surprises.

| | Xiu Xiu Air Force CD (2006)
Million Microphones CD music
$13.09 After the expansive darkness of La Foręt, Xiu Xiu return with The Air Force, a set of songs that manages to be just as challenging as La Foręt, but sparer and somehow more eclectic-sounding at the same time. This time around, Jamie Stewart and company's explorations of vulnerability and ugliness-beauty are even more vivid; as usual, Stewart's breathtakingly concise, poetic lyrics are front and center. He captures longing and self-loathing on "Buzz Saw," singing "Your acne is like pearl/I swear mine is like brimstone." On the closing track, "Wig Master," he whispers, "Loneliness isn't being alone/It's when someone loves you/And you don't have it in you to love them back," a statement as devastating as it is true. Even for a Xiu Xiu album, The Air Force has a remarkable mix of contrasting sounds and textures: "Bishop, CA" builds dense cathedrals of noise, while the icy, bustling electronics on "Vulture Piano" suggest delicate mechanical wildlife. Meanwhile, the koto, violin, and piano on "Pineapple vs. the Watermelon," "Glue Stick," and "The Fox and the Rabbit" give these tracks the intimacy of chamber music. On the whole, The Air Force leans more toward the avant-garde side of Xiu Xiu's sound, but its poppier moments are no less challenging ...

Million Microphones album
$12.49 This is the fourth album from Orange County rockers Project 86, who started out in 1996 and have had a rather tortured experience in the industry ever since. Having dallied briefly with a major label and left the Tooth & Nail stable in 2003, the band is back together with the latter label in 2004 and back to making the tough, abrasive (but explicitly Christian) punk metal fusion that has become its trademark. Sonically, this stuff is top-notch, thanks to producers Aaron Sprinkle, J.R. McNeely, and Matt Hyde; the sound is dense and crunchy, the chord progressions are interesting, the various sonic elements nicely balanced. The problem is that there is not a single sung melody to be found on this album. That doesn't have to be a problem -- rock, especially punk rock, does not necessarily require melodies. But the instrumental parts are so well crafted and the chord progressions so logical and interesting that these songs sound like they were written with tunes in mind, and that singer Andrew Schwab just forgot to deliver them. (Interestingly, "Safe Haven" actually has some vocal harmonies in the chorus, but they're not pinned to a melody.) The result is an impressive album that most listeners will probably respect more than they enjoy. ~ Rick Anderson
