Windsor for the Derby effectively mixes ambience and post-rock guitar-playing on Calm Hades Float, the group's first album. Most of the songs here begin with clean-toned guitar arpeggios -- think Durutti Column, or a less complex Slint -- and feature distant drums, buried vocals, and layers of guitar feedback. Like most ambient, Calm Hades Float aims for atmosphere, not drama: The songs lumber slowly and include few structural changes, and the guitar parts are poker-faced and minimal. Adam Wilitzie mixes everything, but the guitar is low enough that the listener has to strain to hear the swelling background noise. Its presence is nonetheless important, though, because it makes Windsor for the Derby's music feel motionless. The group's guitar style is partially derived from Slint's brand of math rock, but the effect of Windsor for the Derby's music has more to do with the rich stasis of Labradford or Stars of the Lid. ~ Charlie Wilmoth

In 2006, Secretly Canadian reissued Calm Hades Float with three bonus tracks, the enigmatic"+/-" and live versions of "Mythologies" (its studio version appeared on the Emotional Rescue album) and "Skimming" (whose original version was recorded for 1997's Minnie Greunzfeldt album). No slop or throwaway material here, this live stuff in particular is what dreams -- or perhaps nightmares -- are made of. A worthwhile investment for anyone who bought the original or for those seeking a worthy introduction. ~ Charlie Wilmoth & Thom Jurek

Calm Hades Float album
$15.35 Porcupine Tree's first album for K-Scope/Snapper starts out with a definite bang -- "Even Less," with some of the quartet's biggest, blasting rock epic music yet, yet also shot through with the gentler, acoustic side that makes Porcupine Tree so intimate and lovely. The net result easily calls Yes to mind, but Steven Wilson's not so high-pitched as Jon Anderson and Richard Barbieri completely avoids Rick Wakeman's extreme idiocies -- prog that knows when less is more. With that as a fine signal for the album as a whole, Stupid Dream takes it from there -- Wilson as a songwriter and singer both sounds recharged and more ambitious, while the group collectively pours it on. The loud passages feel truly sky-smashing, the calmer ones perfectly close, and the overall sense of build and drama -- "A Smart Kid" is a fine example -- spot-on. Strings from the East of England Orchestra and guest work on Wilson's sometime Bass Communion partner Theo Travis add even lusher atmospheres without swamping the tunes. As always, the group isn't afraid to experiment where others merely re-create -- check out the funky breaks Colin Edwin and Chris Maitland lay down on "Slave Called Shiver," not to mention Wilson's catchy piano figure and Barbieri's Hammond organ fills. Lyrically, Wilson comes up with some of his best work yet. ...

Calm Hades Float music CDs
$14.69 Slip on Preaching to the Fire, the second album by the Great Depression, and those who were there at the time will be instantly transported back to the late '80s, specifically that portion reflected by MTV's 120 Minutes and late-night college radio. Pre-Nirvana alternative rock is the order of the day here, as exemplified by folks like My Bloody Valentine, the the Ocean Blue, and Lush; swells of heavily reverbed guitar eddy and swirl under Todd Casper's low-key, diffident vocals as synths and electronic drums decorate the songs with Stone Roses-style echoes of Madchester. It's no surprise at all that U.K. indie stalwart Fire Records -- home of the Television Personalities and the Close Lobsters -- released this album. Casper and his partner in jangly nostalgia, Tom Cranley, have such obvious affection for this sound that it would be impossible for anyone with fond memories of the Blue Aeroplanes to dislike Preaching to the Fire, so it seems like the album title is meant as a self-deprecating play on words. The problem is that Casper and Cranley, ...
