The band is brash and palpably bursting with confidence, which may explain why Sly pulled a postmodern Beatles move, quoting "Dance to the Music" at the tag of the opening "Dynamite." (On the other hand, maybe Sly just had a thing for the Beatles--there's an "Eleanor Rigby" quote in "Plastic Jim.") Interestingly, despite the album's popularity, LIFE yielded no hit singles, although almost everybody assumed that the title song, an FM radio favorite, had actually charted.
LIFE, Sly's follow-up to his commercial breakthrough, DANCE TO THE MUSIC, was very much in the same vein as its predecessor. An innovative blend of rock and soul, with large helpings of horns, fuzz guitar, and bottom-heavy bass, it was to become the sonic template for just about every funk act of the '70s.
Sly & the Family Stone: Brother Freddy Stone (guitar); Gerry Martini (saxophone); Cynthia Robinson (trumpet); Sister Rosie Stone (electric piano); Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart (organ); Larry Graham (bass guitar); Greg Errico (percussion).
Rolling Stone (9/21/95, p.85) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...LIFE is where Sly's dazzling all-things-to-all-people vision snaps into full focus....When Sly testifies on `Life,' insisting that `you don't have to come down' and `you don't have to die before you live,' the ebullient music supports his spiritual tightrope walk..." Life album
$24.79 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning blues-rock giants like Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, but also his `50s skiffle recordings (basically the British version of jug-band music) with the Ken Colyer band and his own skiffle group, and even an early acoustic guitar duel with famed fingerpicker Davey Graham on "3/4 A.D." Over the course of its two discs, this collection examines ...
| | Gram Parsons Complete Reprise Sessions CDs (2006) Remastered; Boxed Set
Life CD music
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Other features scattered on the first two discs include radio interviews (with Parsons's southern hippie charm in overdrive); captivatingly raw acoustic performances with him, Harris, and drummer N.D. Smart; and an instrumental version of "Return of the Grievous Angel" that reveals just how ace a country band the Waycross longhair had.

$7.69 Though it failed to achieve the commercial success of its follow-up, DANCE TO THE MUSIC, Sly & The Family Stone's debut album established a precedent for a new blend of rock, soul, and funk. This was ground zero for a new generation of progressive R&B. Led by the assertive vocals and soulful keyboard work of Sly, the band pumped out energetic, horn-driven grooves that combined the propulsion of Motown with the socially relevant lyrics and hard-edged electricity of late-'60s rock ...
| | Sly & The Family Stone Fresh CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Limited Edition; Remastered
Life CD music
$7.59 Sly and the Family Stone created the blueprint for funk's direction in the late '60s; a sound dense, sophisticated, and complex on one hand, spacious and rhythmically elemental on the other, a style that seemed loose and open, yet demanded musical precision. In the early '70s, Sly left behind the churning, up-tempo anthems to brotherhood and positive thinking to develop a darker, more introspective sound that focused ever more intently on the subtle interaction of rhythmic elements. The result, as heard on 1971's THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON and 1973's FRESH, proved Sly's artistic apex.
Though lesser known than RIOT, and featuring ...

Life songs
$15.15 COLLECTION is the greatest hits release from the heavy metal group, Fastway, which includes the formidable musical talents of Eddie Clarke from Motorhead; Pete Way, of UFO; and Dave King and Jerry Shirley of Humble Pie. The album includes 19 hard-hitting songs.
Upon splitting from Motörhead in 1982, guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke wasted no time putting together another band, Fastway. Those expecting another biker metal band must have been disappointed, 'cause Fastway smoothed out the rough edges of Clarke's previous band in favor of a far more radio-friendly sound. And the move seemed to work initially, as Fastway's 1983 self-titled debut outsold any Motörhead album in the U.S. -- spawning the MTV hit "Say What You Will." But the group was unable to sustain its initial success, and lasted for only a few more albums before pulling the plug. The 19-track overview Collection covers most of the bases, as it contains a healthy helping from the group's three best studio efforts: their aforementioned self-titled debut, 1984's All Fired Up, and 1986's Trick or Treat (the latter a soundtrack to an obscure, quite awful movie starring both Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne). Included are such highlights as "Trick or Treat," "The World Waits for You," and of course the aforementioned ...
| | Scarface My Homies CDs (2006) Chop
Life album
$13.89 In 2006's MY HOMIES PART 2, Southern gangsta rapper Scarface blends violent ghetto tales like "Southern Nigga" with smartly told vignettes like "My Life," his reunion with the Geto Boys. Scarface may still be too raw for prime time, but when he's got cuts of the caliber of "Definition of Real," his collaboration with Ice-T, and "Never Snitch," where he partners with The Game, it doesn't matter.
Scarface's two-disc opus MY HOMIES keeps an unswerving eye on something too many rappers tend to ignore: the music. That's not to say that his lyrical and verbal skills are anything less than first-rate, but underneath the raps there's a real musicality at work, which serves to not only support, but enhance Scarface's observations about modern-day urban life. Irresistible analog synth hooks, simple-but-arresting rhythm tracks, and a sense of arrangement that is both economical and effective; these are the tools that Scarface uses to realize his vision. On the thirty cuts contained here, he examines the world he sees around him, the hustlers, the violence and the emotional turmoil, with a real sense of empathy.
Scarface was never one of the more consistent hardcore rappers, falling prey to a tendency for cartoonish violence and comic-book gangsta fantasies. As long as his music hit hard, such traits were forgivable, but he began to slip in the mid-'90s, relying on familiar styles, samples, beats, and grooves. All of these factors are reasons why his double-disc opus, My Homies, was not the greatest of ideas. Scarface simply doesn't have enough ideas to sustain an album of this gargantuan size, especially since it follows Untouchable by just a year. He recycles beats and basslines, and he repeats themes over and over again. The moments that do work, such as the dynamic Master P collaboration "Homies & Thugs," only put the weakness of the remaining album in sharper relief. My Homies would have been tiring if it had been a single 70-minute disc, but at this bloated double length, it's plain exhausting. [Further pain comes from the fact that this is the "screwed & chopped" version -- essentially slowing down and stretching out an already sprawling album.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
