"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.

Swell Season CD music
$11.35 One of Ireland's most accomplished musical exports, the Frames built a fan base at home and abroad with tireless touring and passionate albums such as 1996's FITZCARRALDO and 2001's FOR THE BIRDS. BURN THE MAPS, the Frames' 2005 debut for the Anti label, is arguably their most focused and polished effort to date. The band's simmering intensity, folk-rock leanings, and sometimes explosive, ...

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record over its successor, however, as a more modest-sized creation chock full of superb ...

Swell Season songs
$13.45 This follow-up to the Frames' acclaimed 2004 Anti- debut, BURN THE MAPS, finds the acclaimed Irish rock band working in the same widescreen scope as on that album, with songs ebbing and flowing with crashing waves of guitar lines and the fascinatingly emotive vocals of frontman Glen Hansard. Many of the tunes on THE COST unwind slowly, particularly the mesmerizing opener, "Song for Someone." There is always something unpredictable at play, though, as on "Rise," which moves from a delicate, folk-like mood to a brief, intense furor, and "True," ...

Swell Season songs
$15.55 Folk music always played a part in Wishbone Ash's unique style, along with blues, rock & roll, and Yes-style prog-rock riffs, but long time fans might be a little surprised by this set. It's Wishbone Ash unplugged, with nary an electric guitar on hand until the closing "Everybody Needs a Friend," to which founding member Andy Powell contributes some dazzling solos. The songs mostly have a strong Celtic flavor, with the exception of an occasional blues-based tune like ...

After the abstract funk experimentation of REMAIN IN LIGHT and SPEAKING IN TONGUES, the Heads decided to return to their roots with LITTLE CREATURES. They abandoned the modal, polyrhythmic approach in favor of the two-guitars/4/4 pop structures of yore. While LITTLE CREATURES is the band's most accessible, radio-friendly album, it's not a step backwards by any means, because as they return to the quirky "new wave" style that made them famous, they bring a well-earned sophistication (both harmonic and lyrical) to the table. These advances allow the band to knock out a crop of winners, like the anti-anthem "Road To Nowhere," the semi-mystical (but still damn catchy) "And She Was" and the we've-got-a-baby-now, let's-party-with-him rocker "Stay Up Late." Nothing here is as groundbreaking as BUILDINGS AND FOOD, but it's still the Talking Heads, full of idiosyncratic charm and smart-but-infectious tunes.
This Dualdisc features the full album on the CD side along with bonus CD tracks "And She Was" and "Road to Nowhere," along with an extended mix of "Television Man>" The DVD side presents the music videos for "And She Was" and "Road to Nowhere."
Recorded at Sigma Sound, New York, New York.
