Less than a year after CRUEL AND GENTLE THINGS, Charlie Sexton's first album in a decade, the lauded vocalist/guitarist treated fans to SOUTHSIDE SESSIONS, an EP of collaborations with singer-songwriter Shannon McNally. In addition to presenting reworkings of two tunes from the former album (which included guest vocals by McNally), the short-but-sweet release features the beautifully rustic "Old Cypress Tree" and a moving rendition of Townes Van Zandt's "No Place to Fall," both of which showcase Sexton and McNally's expressive voices. With their spare, subtle arrangements, these songs each resonate with soulful, country/folk-leaning simplicity, making this seven-track outing more satisfying than many full-length albums by their roots-rock peers.
Personnel: Charlie Sexton; J.J. Johnson , Shannon McNally, Carter Albrecht.
No Depression (p.134) - "The real treasures are the perfectly chosen covers: Townes Van Zandt's 'No Place To Fall'...Jay Farrar's take on Townes' 'Rex's Blues'; and Jesse Winchester's beautiful 'Biloxi'..." Charlie Sexton Southside Sessions Songs Southside Sessions Review

Southside Sessions album
$11.69 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.
Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a glove. The album's soundscapes are lush and echo-laden, and nearly every track has a discreet disco pulse; "Valentine," ...
| | Laura Branigan Self Control CD (1984)
Southside Sessions CD music
$6.09 Laura Branigan's third album capitalized on the Euro-dance-pop and affecting ballads that made her an international star while allowing her to grow as a vocalist. Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception."The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest hit. The song itself works, but Branigan was never a sex bomb, so the fact that she pulls it off is indicative of her power as a performer. "Ti Amo" is the album's theatrical ballad, which works well with breathy, dramatic ...
| | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
Southside Sessions music CDs
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate ...
| | Tift Merritt Tambourine CD (2004)
Southside Sessions songs
$12.59 Following in the footsteps of alt-country icons Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer, and Maria McKee, Tift Merritt gilds her sophomore effort, TAMBOURINE, with country-inflected soul, a stylistic crossroads where Nashville and Muscle Shoals meet. Teaming up with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made ...

| | Rick Springfield Living In Oz CD (1983)
Southside Sessions CD music
$5.95 Though this was Rick Springfield's ninth album, it seemed like the third to most pop music fans, as it came on the heels of his breakthrough, Working Class Dog, and its successful follow-up, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet. And though this contained as many hits as the aforementioned collections, it isn't remembered as quite the same in terms of accomplishment; this may be because it is so personal that it's just not as accessible. Living in Oz is Springfield's response to the dance-pop wave that was just starting to build and would be prominent until ...

Southside Sessions music CDs
$15.09 Though Styx became known as purveyors of seamless AOR power ballads in the late 1970s, few recall that they spent the early part of that decade working a grittier, more complex format. Before
singer/songwriter/guitarist Tommy Shaw arrived to aid Styx in their
pursuit of the mainstream, they released four albums on indie label
Wooden Nickel between 1972 and 1974. With original guitarist John
