Amek album
$13.19 Following the decadent, club-style excursions of 2008's HOTEL, Moby returns for a more contemplative sound on the melancholic WAIT FOR ME. Working through deeply personal material and a more intimate, though at times cinematic, sound palette, the album ranks as among his best in over 10 years.
Moby's most unified and understated album, and all the better for it, WAIT FOR ME is a morose set of elegantly bleary material, quite a shift from the hedonistic club tracks of LAST NIGHT. Dominated by instrumentals, "Shot in the Back of the Head" is the most evocative of the bunch, seemingly pulled from an unreleased David Lynch film scored by the Afghan Whigs circa GENTLEMEN--a lament from a dustbowl, full of mournful slide guitar and dewy electric piano. Other than "Mistake"--a glum neo-post-punk rave-up that, despite its cathartic release, remains ...

| | Tangerine Dream Phaedra CD (1974)
Amek music CDs
$8.85 The title track is an almost spooky exercise in synth/sequencer tension and dynamics: while eerie atmospheres of Mellotron go head to head with spiraling Moogs, dense, humming sequencer webs percolate along the surface, motile and mobile. The album's closer, "Sequent C," leaves the listener breathless, as black electronic clouds form and dissipate and the surrounding space becomes corporeal sound. PHAEDRA remains one of the seminal recordings of the electronic movement, and stands up--even years later--as an original, stunning piece of music.
Widely considered one of Tangerine Dream's masterworks, fallout from the sonic phenomenon that is PHAEDRA can still ...

| | DJ Venom Raise The Volume CD (2002)
Amek music CDs
$13.35 DJ Venom continues his output of hardcore-style mix albums with Raise the Volume. Over the course of 29 songs, the East Coast DJ moves through one maddening track after another, all of which are driven by distorted bass blasts and rave-style ornamentation, the latter usually comprised of either a synth riff or looped sample. Venom seldom lets his tracks play out longer than two or three minutes, as he's quick to bring in the next one. You probably won't recognize too many of the tracks or producers highlighted on this mix, though many of the relatively unestablished producers -- DJ Tony, Archangelz, DJ James BND 007, DJ Vortex, and Venom himself -- do show up multiple times. It's easy to compare Venom to similar quick-mixing hardcore DJs like DJ Irene or Richard "Humpty" Vission, and here he does little to distance himself from these better-known DJs. Raise the Volume is very much what you'll expect if you're already familiar with Venom's other releases and, in that aspect, ...

| | Adam & The Ants Dirk Wears White Socks CD (1979) (Import) Reissue; Remastered; Japan
Amek songs
$7.03 Pioneering new wavers Adam & The Ants' classic first album DIRK WEARS WHITE SOCKS, which first appeared in 1979, is back and remastered in this British rerelease.
This import includes seven exclusive cuts--"Whip In My Valise," "Kick!," "Physical", "Cartrouble" (Parts 1 & 2-Chris Hughes Mix), "Friends," "Cartrouble" (Single Version), & "Kick" (Single Version).
The original Ants lineup released only one LP, Dirk Wears White Sox for Do It in 1979. The album finds a young Adam Ant exploring the sometimes-awkward fusion of punk, glam, and minimalist post-punk with bizarre images and disturbing tales of alienation, sex, and brutality. And while the somewhat pretentious, overly arty lyrics and inexperienced playing are a drawback, the album offers a fascinating look at the Ants' formative years, capturing a raw energy that would be sacrificed for more polish on subsequent releases. [At the height of Antmania, Adam acquired the rights to the album, remixing it, dropping a few tracks, and adding a couple of early tracks for reissue in 1983 with a different cover for Epic. In 1995, Sony Music U.K. released a hybrid version for CD, restoring the cover art, original mixes, and the previously dropped tracks but retaining the additions and running order of the reissue. Epic chose to keep the remixed version for CD release in the U.S.] ~ Chris Woodstra
Digitally remastered jewelcased reissue of the New Wave act's debut album, originally released in 1979, Before the face paint, pirate outfits and theatrical performances and videos, Adam and his early Ants were Post-Punk art rockers covered in a dark, Gothic glaze. The tracks here capture early Adam in all his twisted glory, approaching Punk from different angles and creating an eclectic album that sounded like no-one else. Abrasive ...

| | Angel Corpse Of Lucifer And Lightning CD (2007)
Amek CD music
$11.39 Judging from their name alone, there should be confusion as to what style of music Angel Corpse specialize in. But if you're still searching for answers, just take a gander at the album title and cover art of their 2007 release, Of Lucifer & Lightning (with a cover illustration depicting what appears to be Beelzebub eating an upside-down Jesus Christ, with Armageddon going on in the background). Yep, black metal/death metal is the name of the game here -- gobs of it. Indecipherable vocals, metronome-gone-mad drumming, ...

$9.89 La La Land's Acetate is an imprint that knows what it likes. And what it likes, as heard in these 15 acts, 20 songs, and 60 minutes, is bands that crank up guitars and play classic riffing rock `n' roll! There's a lot of patron saint Johnny Thunders; it's a squalling six-string line that goes, historically, from Chuck Berry to Rolling Stones (Sonny Vincent punks up the Stones' cover of Berry's "Carol" with Arthur Kane's finale on bass), to Kane and Thunders' New York Dolls (The Hangmen, as produced by Social Distortion's Mike Ness) and Thunders' Heartbreakers -- plus understudies The Joneses (Nine Pound Hammer) -- to Dead Kennedys (Charley Horse), to Social D (Turbo A.C's); there's also hints of Aerosmith and AC/DC (Rhino Bucket). Then there's the Berry line that leads to Detroit, a la Stooges (Dragbeat) ...
